I believe your own supremely beautiful book on mathematical beauty is built on similar principles. A self-supporting two-level structure, easily navigable, structured simply by chapter and section.

Incidentally, I love your use of marginal notes in your book! A long time ago, having studied Bringhust, I once typeset a handbook for my wife's NGO using marginal notes instead of footnotes. (An I did in TeX, using my own plain TeX macro package. Font was Gerard Unger's Swift.)

P.S. Writing this post I discovered that "navigable" is the correct word for what until today I always called "navigatable".

I agree with you in terms of substance and usefulness, of course. Yet I also have to admire the autor's Chuzpah. "Read my book, Reader, I have a story to tell. Read it, I will take you along."

That kind of style was still quite common, say thirty or fourty years ago, among historians and art historians. The same people whose lectures or conference talks would be read out from perfectly written notes. In some cases, it even worked.

At the other extreme is the excessive structuring adopted in many science texts, where we may have to keep track of sub-sub-sub-sections.

Paul Halmos in his books as ever got it right. Three levels: parts, chapters, sections within chapters. Each section has 1-2 pages; each chapter is a handful of sections, no other headings except flags for Theorems. The section titles are extremely brief, almost serving as index lables. The perfect merger of self-sustaining narrative and formal section structure.

« Blouses blanches et Gwenn ha Du » est un livre qui relate l'histoire des étudiants en médecine rennais qui en 1973 ont tenu la grève 93 jours: occupation de la faculté, manifestation à Paris, séquestration des profs... Il y a pas mal de photos du mouvement, flicaille, pat d'eph et tignasses incluses, des tracts, des illustrations, une analyse et des entretiens avec des acteurs et actrice de l'époque.
