  1. 📚😆 "I Own 28,000 Books" 🤣 - Translation: I Own 28,000 Logistics Nightmares. Turns out, collecting books isn't an intellectual pursuit; it's just an elaborate plan to torment moving companies and insurance agents. 📦📚😅

  2. I’m dipping back into #LibraryThing for cataloguing my books and keeping tabs on what I'm reading / have read / want to read etc. I've used various sites in the past - Goodreads, StoryGraph and NeoDB but have never been completely satisfied with any of them.

I have an older account from about 15 years ago on LibraryThing which I've resurrected and into which I’m importing books from StoryGraph. The tagging and collection features of LT seem to be quite useful. It'll take a while to tweak things, no doubt, but that's part of the fun, surely…?

Anyway, here’s my profile if anyone else is on there:

  3. The new bibliomaniacs

Rare book collecting is booming as young people raised in the digital age seek tangible connections to the past.

  4. CW: Literature, War, Used Books

My #UsedBook find for today: “Stop the War” by Allen James. Copyright 1970.

A book of quotes against the concept of war, published during the Vietnam War. Interspersed are pages with photographs by Anthony Goldschmidt of grave markers from Arlington National Cemetary.

  5. I really, really love it when decorative elements from the page edges and the endbands meet. It can be a subtle thing but it's just lovely when you notice it. I went simple on the endbands for this book because there is a LOT going on everywhere else!

  6. #PSA: "Literary Hub is pleased to announce that submissions are now open for the ninth annual Honey & Wax Book Collecting Prize, which awards $1,000 for “an outstanding book collection conceived and built by a woman aged 30 or younger,” who lives anywhere in the United States."

  7. Spent some time FINALLY using the clear sleeves on dust jackets of some books I've been picking up over the years.

While jacketing my F. Paul Wilson books (first editions of both "The Keep" and "Black Wind"), I was astonished to discover that "Black Wind" was autographed!

  8. #Ballard has a new shop selling old, collectible #Books. I’m awed and terrified to touch anything in their back room.

  9. #Booktober / #Spooktober Day 3: a book from just last year! An essential read for ghost story collectors on which stories are told and how they evolve - and what gets left out. Highly recommended.

  10. #Booktober / #Spooktober Day 2: Sheila St. Clair’s Psychic Phenomena in Ireland. Seems to be the OG source for a number of stories that show up in many places now. Not dissimilar to Joan Forman in many ways - my fellow ghost story collectors will know what I mean!

  11. Happy first day of #Booktober / #Spooktober Kicking off this year’s daily #SpookyBook share with a real banger: mid-century cover, haunted Classic Sixes in Manhattan with frighteningly low rents, spooky cocktail party vibe. 👻🎃🍸

  12. The huge purge/reorganization of the library at our house continues. Trying to round up my space/aviation collection (all of which stay). Currently have about 140 volumes here, but I know there are more to be found.

  13. Made a friend last month and just found out her partner is a rare book dealer. Very interesting catalogue I thought I’d share with @bookstodon - thompsonrarebooks.com/ #rarebooks #bookcollecting #books #bookstodon

  14. Got quite a bargain here, 4 volumes of this monumental series, Birds of the Western Palearctic (the BWP) for only £12. A lifelong 'want'

If you’re even remotely interested in books, particularly dictionaries, you must read this absolutely lovely article about Madeleine Kripke, her life, and her collection.

(Personal bonus content: @jessesheidlower, whom I contacted almost exactly 21 years ago with a question on an F-word phrase, which he answered with a perfect and thorough explanation ❤️)

  16. Good alternatives to #Goodreads: #Storygraph and #BookWyrm (when not down). And now I just saw #Hardback.app. But...

Is there a rival to #LibraryThing? LibraryThing is a personal #library application. E.g., I can catalogue my #books from the 1800s and not just books w/ an ISDN. The problem: the interface is rather terrible, bolt-together, & antiquated. I just hate using it. Is there anything else out there? Thoughts on #OpenLibrary.org?

  17. @bookstodon
I'm not sure I agree completely, but it's an interesting take on having a lot of books. I definitely encounter the snobbery in my work (of selling books).
