#LittleFreeLibraries are turning into '#LittleBeeLibraries' to give #pollinators a cozy place to rest
May 28, 2026
"Rachael Harms Mahlandt specializes in 'sidewalk joy.'
"For years, the #PortlandOR artist, who goes by @pdxdinorama on social media, has been helping her neighbors transform ordinary walkways, curb gardens, and front yards into colorful, interactive art installations.
"Through the Worldwide Sidewalk Joy Map, Harms Mahlandt encourages artists around the world to 'add whimsy' to their own neighborhoods with tiny #PuzzleLibraries, #WishingTrees, #ToySwaps, miniature #ArtMuseums, #PlantExchanges, #DinoDioramas — and, of course, little #FreeLibraries.
"And one of her latest additions to the list isn’t just sparking joy; it’s helping the pollinators in her neighborhood thrive.
"On May 5, Manlandt shared a video of a Little Bee Library, a #bookbox that had been transformed into a miniature garden for local pollinators to rest and recharge."

Stepped out the front door to run back to store.
Night time. Dark. Neighbors still taking walks.
At the edge of the yard, by the sidewalk, our bookbox was lit up by the two solar yard lights shining down on the books inside.
At the box, was a parent with two small children. Door open, checking out the books.
Happy that they were!
Hope the kids found something inside.

Got two solar yard lights from Harbor Freight.
Took the panels off, trimmed plastic from back, drilled holes for mounting screws, soldered extension wire for LED lights.
Removed plastic ground stake part from lights. Cut old wooden handle in half, slotted ends, mounted lights, dropped into plastic horn tubes, cable ties galore.
Even on panels, so maybe no yoinky my 18650 batteries, dammit.
Downpointy lights light inside of box again!
Thus have I rehorned my literary #jackalope

Book box in front of house was unlit last night.
I'd built a jackalope gargoyle head, put it at the top of the box. Then for the jackalope horns, I had used a yard light solar panel and LED light, light positioned to light box interior.
It was gone last night.
Someone had yoinked the horns. Cutting the wiring. Disappointing. But at least I can say this completely novel sentence:
"I say! Some fellow of leisurely moral development has stolen the horns of my solar jackalope!"

Out mowing the yard, I saw a guy go past, slow, turn his motorcycle around, come back. He stopped, asked if it was our bookbox by the sidewalk.
"Hope so, it's in our yard. Yes."
"I got a book out of there, and OMG, I couldn't put it down! It was 'Red Notice', by Bill Browder."
"I'm glad you enjoyed it. That's good."
I went inside, found a related book, "Red Mafia", brought it out and gave it to him.
It felt good, to know that some of our efforts are working, you know?

For the #bookbox out front, we have had a solar pathway light clamped to the edge of the roof, shining down at night.
So if someone was taking a walk in the evening, they could stop and browse.
I thought I should make a mount to hold the light and the panel. How about as antlers of some beast?
Got the Sawsall and lopped clunks off a stub of 4x4. Holes for the antlers. Eye on each side. Paint it black. White for eyes and teeth.
Uh-oh, it's dripping!
Well, that's grimmer than I intended...

Possible agenda for today:
Get child beasts to school, vacuum foot crumbs out of cars, pay bill, assemble chicken leg book box, start new clover plugs for yard, pull Yes Prop 50 agitprop, fold laundry, splurge on morse code dit-dit toy, figure out if me bird-day cake should have binary candles where only some lit?
Launch!

Clicky-clacky brain gears move.
Old Ikea kid bed not going to get donated, missing parts.
Set up in side yard with circular saw, reassemble, but differently, cutting short sections, sliding panels back in, all hackish. Make tall box.
Plexiglas scrap squares, glued edgewise, slid into hasty slotted frame for windowed door.
A couple shelves inside for free books
Got to get it up off ground? How?
Kid blurts out,
"On chicken legs! Like Baba Yaga's house has!"

Our kid built a book box for front of house.
Not a Little Free Library, because we not affiliated.
I was trying to keep my kid, whose idea it all was, from putting damn post into the front yard. So I suggested, nail box to old sawhorse.
Painted it, added tall ears and goofy eyes to box. "What is it? Ha! Book Donkey!"
Neighbors pass. Kid says, "This thing is so stupid!" Yes. Later, parent passes, says, "I am looking at this. It is magical!" Yes.
But time passes. Want to upgrade.
