  1. Rutherford County, #Tennessee has been in the news for its ‘lead’ in the #MAGA cult’s national #BookBanning race.

The chief protagonist in the Board of #Education is #CalebTidwell. Sadly, he was not up for re-election this year. But a fellow #Republican who resisted some of his #BookBan requests was. A #MAGA cult member challenged her and was arrested for stealing political signs during early voting. He won the primary. mainstreetmediatn.com/articles

He just lost to a #Democrat in the election. 😂

  2. A surefire way to make sure I read something I am not ‘supposed to’ is to ban me from doing so. That tells me something in that book must be important enough that someone in power doesn’t want me to read or know, so they can stay in control and keep me ignorant.

  3. From my home desk in London, UK, I safely campaigned against this LGBTQIA+ censorship, thankful that the chances of sweeping book bans taking hold in the libraries and schools near me felt infinitesimally small.
    It's not.

  5. A quotation from Kurt Vonnegut

And on the subject of burning books: I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength or their powerful political connections or their great wealth, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and have refused to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles.
So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries.

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (1922-2007) American novelist, journalist
Essay (2004-08-06), “I Love You, Madame Librarian,” In These Times Magazine, Vol. 29, No. 20 (2004-08-30)

  6. In the U.S., Texas Asks Court to Resurrect ‘Unconstitutional’ Book Rating Law, Alarming Publishers and Booksellers

After more than two years, the return of H.B. 900, which would require bookstores and vendors to review all books in Texas schools at their own expense and rate them for sexual content, is a tense, and unwelcome development for freedom-to-read advocates.

  8. Penguin Random House Urges U.S. Congress to Reject Republican Book Banning Bill

"The bill creates strong incentives for schools to remove or avoid a wide range of books and materials," wrote PRH SVP Skip Dye in a letter to lawmakers, adding that, if passed, the law would also force educators and librarians to self-censor, resulting in "further marginalization of vulnerable communities.”

  10. A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle

Someone sent me a clipping from a daily newspaper containing a list of ten books to be removed from library shelves because of their pornographic content. On the list was one of C. S. Lewis’s Narnia books. Also on the list was my book A Wind in the Door. I am totally baffled and frankly fascinated. This is the first time C. S. Lewis and I have been listed together as writers of pornography. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

  11. A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle

I am very wary of those individuals who are neither writers nor editors nor even, in some cases, readers, who feel that they have the right to apply their own moral criteria to the books in public and school libraries. I have enormous respect and admiration and love for the librarians who are rising up to protest this, because they are putting their very jobs on the line.

  12. A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle

We need to dare disturb the universe by not being manipulated or frightened by judgmental groups who assume the right to insist that if we do not agree with them, not only do we not understand but we are wrong. How dull the world would be if we all had to feel the same way about everything, if we all had to like the same books, dislike the same books.

  13. In a twist on #bookbanning, a liberal #NJ school dist. struggling w/ a #mentalhealth crisis pulls a book w/an attempted #suicide. They should’ve listened to author Junot Díaz: “I resist the idea that there's something supremely deterministic, or supremely dangerous, about #art. Art in fact holds people in conversations, acts to limit or to reduce the sense of isolation & loneliness, it raises difficult topics in order to deepen our understanding & build up our resilience npr.org/2026/02/20/nx-s1-57087

The most active voices in #bookbanning are they who do not read...

... Or worse, read one book.
