  1. Self-Titled Summer | Bones UK (2019, UK)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 211 on The List, submitted by moss. Here’s a quick rundown:

    • Point of origin(s): Originally named just Bones, the bones of this group are BFFs rhythm guitarist/vocalist Rosie Oddie (aka Rosie Bones) and lead guitarist Carmen Vandenberg. Both first played together in an all-woman rock band called Fake Club, before forming their own all-woman duo in 2014. In 2016, the duo co-wrote and performed (vocals and guitars) on what ended up being Jeff Beck’s final album, Loud Hailer. Following that, Bones moved across the pond from Camden Town to Los Angeles, and added the “UK” to their name. The album we look at here was their debut album.
    • Tasting notes: “Future rock” (as per the band themselves) i.e., danceable rock tinged with electro-pop, industrial, and indie rock, underneath catchy, empowering lyrics.
    • Standout track: As an avid Bowie fan, I have to mention their cover of “I’m Afraid of Americans” (I particularly love how Rosie makes sure to pronounce “can’t” in both American and British), originally commissioned for The Howard Stern Tribute to David Bowie special. But, seeing as we just looked at Bo Diddley’s s/t album in our last spotlight, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out the tongue-in-cheek closer “Girls Can’t Play Guitar”, which has Bo Diddley’s guitar riff from “I’m a Man” (itself inspired by the riff in Muddy Waters’ “Hoochie Coochie Man”) underneath lyrics based on actual, uh, “feedback” these women were once given.
    • Where are they now?: Also in 2019, the band released an EP of unplugged versions of some of the tracks from the s/t, Unplugged, and then a follow-up album Soft just last year. According to their socials, they seem to be working on the next album already.

    Happy listening!
