🌠 The September ε-Perseids flared on 10 Sep 2026 for ~1.5 hours: ZHR around 73 ±33 vs the usual 8. Visual and radio observers caught it, and the Global Meteor Network independently confirmed the peak. Bright meteors (r = 2.01). A nice case of amateur and network data complementing each other. ☄️ A new study (Courtot, Saillenfest, Fouchard, Vaubaillon; freely available on arXiv) maps the chaotic dynamics of the Northern and Southern Taurid meteoroid streams using chaos maps and numerical simulations. It shows how the von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai mechanism and Jupiter mean-motion resonances shape a stream linked to major fireballs.

🛰️ The International Meteor Organization (IMO) suffered a cyberattack that dealt "a critical blow" to its aging website infrastructure, leaving parts of the site down for weeks. Restoring the fireball-reporting system - the backbone of a worldwide volunteer observer network like Bolidozor - was the top priority. No attacker has claimed responsibility yet.

🌠 An all-sky composite from four meteor cameras at Valašské Meziříčí Observatory (CEMeNt network, Czechia) caught 1,706 meteors on the night of 12–13 Aug. Most are Perseids – their trails converge on a single radiant in Perseus. Fainter showers show up too: kappa Cygnids and the diffuse antihelion source. Amateur camera networks delivering hard data.

The CARMELo network has published its July 2026 report. Eighteen amateur SDR receivers in Italy, Spain, the UK, Switzerland and the USA track meteor echoes off France's GRAVES radar (143.050 MHz). New this time: an in-house Python algorithm computing the Radio Zenithal Hourly Rate. A single receiver costs about €210 to build.

💥 New Meteor Library paper: above 80 km the atmosphere acts as a low-pass filter on meteor infrasound. Across 90 detections, dominant frequency drops with source altitude — above 100 km, 75% of signals are sub-1 Hz. Period-based bolide energies can be overestimated by 1–2 orders of magnitude.

🌠 Perseids ramping up! Meteor Activity Outlook 1–7 Aug 2026 (eMetN): Northern Hemisphere sporadic rates now 2× higher than 3 months ago, up to ~15 meteors/h before dawn. Perseids peak Aug 13 at new moon — perfect for data collection. Join visual & video observing (IMO, GMN).

☄️ The Southern δ-Aquariids and α-Capricornids peak on the night of 30–31 Jul 2026. The Global Meteor Network – a volunteer-run mesh of low-cost Raspberry Pi cameras – publishes meteor radiants, orbits and masses as open data (CC BY 4.0), updated every 6 hours.

📡 The amateur CARMELo network (Italy, Spain, UK, Switzerland) tracks meteors by radio: 17 SDR + Raspberry Pi receivers (~€210) listen for echoes off France's GRAVES radar. June data caught the daytime Arietids – homogeneous and open. A lovely example of citizen radio astronomy. (11 Jul 2026)

Data science in meteor studies: a new paper models the dynamical origin of millimetre-sized sporadic meteoroids — the particles that deliver most of the mass flux hitting Earth. The analysis (Dao, Brown, Pokorný) builds on open data from meteor radars and video networks. Published in eMetN's Meteor Library.

📊 Data science meets meteor astronomy. A new study uses Poisson regression to analyse the Q1-2026 "surge" of fireballs reported to the American Meteor Society — and finds the counts are in line with normal activity, with little evidence for the "February fireballs" effect. Open data + statistics. (8 Jul 2026)

📡 Radio meteors – June 2026: an observer in Kampenhout (BE) published a survey of reflections on the VVS 49.99 MHz beacon. The daytime Arietids and ζ Perseids dominated; 9 echoes lasted over a minute this month. Raw data are freely downloadable as CSV. Citizen radio astronomy in action.

☄️ Cameras and satellites missed a fireball over Alaska. So a Sandia Labs team + citizen scientists reconstructed its path from infrasound and seismic data — captured by 57 sensors. Videos shared by volunteers helped verify the result and locate fallen meteorites. A new route for planetary defense. (Jun 30, 2026)

📡 Radio Meteor Zoo: Belgium's BRAMS radio-meteor network teams up with Zooniverse, inviting volunteers to spot meteor echoes in radio spectrograms. The current campaign targets the year's strongest daytime showers — the Arietids and ζ Perseids. Human eyes still beat the algorithms at counting meteors, and anyone can join.

🌠 The June Bootids meteor shower peaks on the night of 27 Jun 2026. Spawned by comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke, it's famous for unpredictable outbursts (sometimes >100 meteors/h). The IMO and AMS networks collect amateur visual and radio reports – a perfect target for citizen science and radio meteor monitoring.

🚁 Finding meteorites with drones + machine learning: a drone flies a grid over the strewn field, takes top-down images, and a neural network flags meteorite candidates. Detection rates of 75–97% with fewer false positives. eMetN Meteor Journal sums up a method that could greatly boost meteorite recoveries.

🔥 AMS logged 2,046 fireballs in Q1 2026, with 38 events drawing 50+ reports (the quarterly average is 18). The total count is normal – but reports per event spiked. Likely cause: AI assistants (ChatGPT, Siri…) now directly guiding witnesses to the AMS report form. Neat citizen-science data!

📡 Simultaneous bolide detection across multiple stations in the Bolidozor network!
This is what raw waterfall spectrograms look like before processing — captured from 4 stations: Náchodsko, Jindřichův Hradec, DDM Třebíč & Žebrák.
When a bright bolide is detected by several stations at once, we call it a "multibolid".
Bolidozor is a cooperative network of volunteer-operated radio meteor detection stations.
