  1. SURPRISE!
    Here's a DAISY WALLPAPER! ❁
Wasn't on your agenda today, was it, to stumble across a daisy wallpaper?
What a monument to nature, peace and the tenacity of the wildflower, and all that.

Were my server not... in America, I may have the upload speed to supply a higher resolution of this image, however, yeah, nah. 1080p is God's chosen resolution for speed and efficiency so that's where we're at.

  3. "There's a WHAT behind the trailer?"
    ----------
My landlord told me there was a creek about 1/4 of a mile behind the property and a trail that went all through the woods, at a peak of property lines owned by 3-4 different people and the state, collectively creating a general no-man's land of "forest" that no one really claims, but those able, curious or interested, wander around in, drive 4x4's through and, as I have, "vibe".

Areas like this exist all over North Carolina and it was common where I grew up for older folk to own a few acres of property, but then ignore the entire back half of it like it isn't there. That's all well and good, curious people, weird folk and kids on journeys to find themselves make good use of these areas throughout their lives.

The first four photos are of the creek area I found, actually, what part of it I walked... because there's actually far more I didn't have time or energy to deal with today, but I did walk a fair half mile of it.

You know, if a guy wanted to take a tent out there and go camping, he might just enjoy that. Hm... that's a fun thought.

    Someone aught to do that.

  5. Highpoint Lake Rematch* and The Busted Heel
    ----------
Yesterday night at work, I grabbed my toolbox to put it up and ran over the back of the heel of my foot. That night, I fantasized about the next morning, this past Thursday, a sunny, slightly-hazy spring day, where I could venture to places at the HighPoint lake trail I had missed previously... after being at work for 10 hours, awake for 14 hours, with a busted up heel. I am a stubborn person.
Even so, some part of me is entirely unaware that it's early spring and that there really isn't much in the way of things to take photos of at the moment other than fisherman taking advantage of the weather-changes as fish move from place to place, but even without a camera, I'd still be hiking, and there were a few good shots here and there... but really, I didn't consider this much of a win day photo-wise, I just had fun hiking lol. ow... yeah, my heel hurts.

I think this area will be a lot better in the mid-fall or late spring when flowers are everywhere, or possibly when it gets damp for mushroom hunting. There are deer here, although I'm not skilled enough, nor do I have the lens (you camera guys know "the lens") to get a deer reliably but there were a few running around.

For now, at least as far as hiking photos go, I need to let Spring bake a bit. There are some local targets to go after around my house tomorrow to get. Apparently our neighbor has a HUUUUGE redbud tree in their front yard that just bloomed all-magenta.

Next "big" trip will be Natural Bridge, but it's going to be an overnight stay at least and require some planning. I'm pushing the lighthouse trip off until late summer. With the war going on, I need to be conservative on money for my own safety for now.

Natural Bridge will also be an exercise in timing. Would you want to go with 200 tourists photo-bombing your shots every five seconds? lol, off-season or bust, yo. I gotta get it done before Spring Break at least.

Another one-off or two before Saturday, I'm taking my mom out to eat tomorrow and it'll be pretty tomorrow too and I'm sure I'll see something to hit the brakes for. Cya!

  7. Pretty? Yes, but also invasive.
These are Bradford Pear blooms, a very invasive species in North Carolina. They dominate other varieties of plants and animal habitats.

"They displace native plant and animal species by overtaking landscapes and crowding out all other trees. Often, you’ll even see the space beneath them to be bare and muddy because even grass can’t make its way in. Though nice to look at, this tree doesn’t support our native wildlife."
    https://conservingcarolina.org/bradford-pears-pretty-but-invasive/

    HOWEVER

    ...they are pretty ngl.
And they are the first plant to flower... that I've noticed, this spring.
So here they are. Bradford Pear Blooms.

These were all taken on 3/6 at Salem Lake in Winston Salem NC, my usual stomping grounds. I wanted to reset my gear, reset *me*, reset everything, and get ready for the new season. It took about half the day to get back into the swing of things, and I had some great shots by the end of it, I think. With this, I'm back in the game and ready for Springtime flowers.

    ...if it would stop RAINING.

Soon, my GoToSocial will either be:
    Remade as a Ghost blog
    or
Transfered to my VPS and ran there instead
...but I do have some performance concerns with that one as it's a 1Ghz 1GB system already hosting prosody and proxying media and whatever else one could ever guess.

Anyway, just give the photos a little time to load, as you do, for now. We'll speed it up soon.

  11. Misc Dump!
This includes a few photos from a walk I did in Kernersville at Cascade Preserve, and two misc shots from a night at my cousin's band's show at Monstercade in Winston Salem.
More shots to come from inside Monstercade soon. I want to do a whole post on that bar.
The lighting wasn't great on the walk but I got some fungi and one decent wintery shot. The rest were a bit too messy and hard-lighty on the lighting to share, but I might pick another out.

Some of these fungus shots have me wanting to mess with "focus bracketing" on my R8, and then taking the photos into Gimp to stack the focus together so I can get more focus on these F1.8 shots up close, but not on the background. I will 100% need my tripod for that so, wherever I go for that needs to... not be far lol. My bag does have a holster and it doesn't weigh too much, but it's still more than nothing.

  13. Well guess what, guys? My first roll of film is developed.

    Fujifilm 200
Canon Rebel 2000 with an 18-70mm lens that's horribly slow

I, love this? I don't know how exactly to express this, but I remember framing up every one of these and knowing the ones that would be winners would be winners. These were the shots I expected to get off of the roll and these were the ones I pushed through #rawtherapee. There's a level of safety and care that goes into knowing each roll of this shit is ~$10 a pop. I messed with exposures and things to my liking a bit as I would any shot from the R8, but I didn't remove a single film grain, it's part of the charm, damnit.

Well, this proves the Rebel is in perfect working order and is ready to shoot and shoot and shoot. That's great considering I paid a whopping $15 for it and it can use EF lenses and that's half of my kit. I can take it, My R8, a 24mm EF lens, a converter, and use them on BOTH the film lens and the R8.

I don't have a 24mm EF lens yet, but bare with me.

    >Dad's roll

Isn't at the lab yet, as I wanted to vet LowFive first as well, and since they're good to go, the Rebel is g2g, I guess I'm g2g on shooting film. The Minolta X-700 has a finished roll, and the X-570 has a counter that won't reset. Note, that this doesn't mean it can't shoot and develop film, it just means I won't know when the roll is out until the crank hits tension. I bought the X-570 broken as a hail-mary towards making the X-700 a trophy piece on a shelf I dedicate to my dad. I love the action on the camera and how vivid the viewfinder is, but I need to test film off of it as well. So, the next two rolls will be those two getting tested.

So, this roll was half Thanksgiving with my family, and half out at Reynolda Museum, which I will return to, I just didn't have the time that day and was just trying to test the camera. Here's some shots from Reynolda. Some shot with autofocus, some not. The R2000 doesn't have the most gangbusters viewfinder but it works well enough.

  15. Today I was up early and decided I'd go out in the morning... at 27F. Luckily I got a new hat and a face covering and I was pretty toasty. I went to the Quarry at Grant Park just down the road from Salem lake and went Downtown for a few shots.

I took the Minolta out at Salem lake and got some good shots with it on some Fuji 400. I can't wait to get those back even though I've shot the lake plenty of times, I just have fun with the camera, mostly.

I didn't like my keeps much this time, but I had more fun on the hike. I only kept three, but I do have the film back from around Thanksgiving to go through and there are a few more artsy shots on those as well. Anyway. All for now, tired of the cold, just want it to be spring so I can go out without feeling like I have to "armor up", and there's no colors, really.

  17. First-off, sorry to anyone seeing this twice for no good reason. There was a reason, a software-related one, but not necessarily good. I lost a few days of posts due to a backup.

Anyhoo, here's the trip to Old Hollow Lake and Salem Lake last week. Man, do I wish I had the original draft for this post so I didn't have to write this out again lol.

I walked 1/3 of the 7 mile hike before my leg started hating me again... but as we all know, going 1/3 in means I had to turn around and take it all back. So, yeah, stubborn me never learns his lesson. I have taken a resolution to completing the 7 mile hike of Salem Lake at some point, but I'll have to return much later, much more prepared and with my leg actually healed.

Anyway, here's the four bests I chose from this trip but like I said when I posted this originally, it was between a few, so, others may trickle in.

    #photography #wildlifephotography #landscapephotography #canon #mirrorless #bofipho #r8 #cameras #birds #ducks #streetphotography (stretching that last one, but... the fisherman, I mean, come on)

  18. I went back to Salem Lake, and had my way with it for the day, walked about 1/3 of the 7 mile trek, realized what I had signed up for without any water or provisions, and turned around at that moment. One day... I'm gonna actually come here with the idea of completing the journey around the perimeter.

There are 1-2 ways to "bail out" if one gets too tired. There's road exits along the trail where you could hail an Uber or Lyft if things get too dicey. For me and my knee right now, dicey is kind of a given, but I did way better today than I had been.

I found a Quantaray lens at Macay's off of Jonestown road for $35. It's a Full Frame, 70-300mm F4-5.6 lens, with macro, and autofocus. It's EF mount and quite fun. It gave photos taken with it a definite 90's-2000's DSLR look, but the simple ability to catch birds now without having to struggle, even if they are a little rough is better than no bird at all.

Here's the four for this trip. There's a few others that survived, and one in particular that will get posted alone that I'll let trickle in through the week. Happy Thanksgiving!

    >hey, that fisherman guy is at Oak Hollow Lake! That's not Salem Lake!

OOF! You got me! I also went to Oak Hollow Lake today, but there weren't many trails to walk along. The water fowl there and the fisherman were from there. The fungus and the sky shot was Salem.

Anyway, more geese and woods later. These were my favorites this time, so they get special treatment.

  19. There was also one other, minor detail about today that will come into play very soon.
The Rebel 2000 that I paid a whoppin' $20 for came in.
Compatible with EF lenses, of which I have a few, this is probably the cheapest way for me to get into film and still have control over the shots.

    Here we go, fam....

    >did you... buy any film?

Well, no... Come back in a week, lol. There's a darkroom in downtown #winstonsalem that I'm sure sells film, and it ain't the only one, I don't believe.

  20. Tanglewood Park - Clemmons, NC - 11/20/25

HORSES! I wasn't expecting horses. I hadn't been here in more than 20 years, though so, I'm not sure what I expected. As usual, on Thursdays, I have the timing advantage for sunrises due to working third shift, and as I was FINALLY gifted a cloudy day after an endless three-week sea of blankness every morning, I got a nice one.

The park itself is nice, Mallard Lake was coned off, but people were driving down there anyway. I didn't feel like I had the energy left after 10 hours of work and 3 hours of walking around this place to explore a lake so I left it for another day.

My leg still bothers me, and I had to fight to get around this place a bit. I'm taking Friday to rest before the next trip out Saturday. Enjoy these for now.

  22. ...This camera is sick. The overcast... eh.
Here's a kid from the park I went to popping a wheelie.
Muddy Creek Greenway, just off of Robinhood road. A lot of bicycles.
I wish our sky would make up its mind for a while. We had extreme cold with zero clouds for two weeks, and now it's overcast all the time. All of these were with the 50mm F1.8 at varying levels of Aperture depending on what I was shooting. I think I did the creek at F16 and the kid at F1.8 and F2 for the first and second. The flower is as low as it'd go. It is the only lens I have for the R8 right now aside from the cursed 90's lens, which is going on an S2000 in a week with some Kodak 400(tee-hee).

edit: Here this is again with 1920x1280 resizes. These actually load.

  24. Today was a trip to Kernersville Lake Park.
And once again... I trusted the damn autofocus too many times.
These shots were taken with autofocus entirely trust-free, ala... manual focus.
I swapped between my 50mm F.18 and my 24mm F2.8. Preferred the 50 most of the time here.

Overall? KLP doesn't offer too many differing views to take a photo of. It's a U-shape around a small piece of the lake. Barring a zoom lens, there isn't much else here to get, but with as many rental boats as there are, it would be good to return in the late-spring to see it full of action and people.

  25. I went to Salem Lake and took a few shots. I need to quit min-maxxing my Camera lol.
So, my problem here... if it ain't obvious, is ISO.
I was bound and damned determined that I'd use an aperture above 10 so I could get good focus shots.
Like, I figured I had enough light for these. I didn't see a lot of noise on the sensor, but man does it show up on some of the photos I had to pass on, and it sucks because I had more ducks, just... grainy ducks. I will salvage some of those photos because I really do like them, but I'll post these four first.

You know, guys. There's a reason landscape photographers use tripods... and gradient filters, and take long exposures of things, despite the fact that they aren't moving to begin with,.... to avoid ISO grain. I KNEW THAT, I see them do it... but, here I am surprised I have to deal with the very thing they do that to avoid.

    Next time, will be perfect."
