So after some more or less blind stumbling with henna body art, I've decided to start doing Science! with it.
So the first experiment was mixing up four batches with the same amount of henna, and four different ratios of the henna to lemon juice (2.5 to 4 of the henna's weight). And I drew short lines and left them on for 2 hours and 20 minutes. I drew lines with the same mixtures but with added "terping" (tea tree essential oil drops, which the Internet recommends for making the colours stronger).
To my extreme surprise, the thickness of the mixture made little difference and also the more diluted henna actually gives a somewhat stronger colour. I expected the opposite. And given that it's easier to apply a gooier mixture than a thicker paste, there's no actual reason to use more henna. At least with this length of skin exposure.
The "terped" henna stains much, much stronger though, so that part is not a myth. The colour is almost twice as strong after this short exposure.
Next experiment will likely be to see how the length of exposure impacts the colour. I need that one to maybe be able to make multiple-colour designs in the future.

The rare update
Well, they're definitely rare at this point, most stuff is out of my hands, lawyer is working on some stuff, and its really a matter of just waiting at this point.
We were at Sunset Hills flea market selling stuff Sat, mixture of left overs from my storage unit flipping days, Vik's stuff, and some of my stuff I don't want. That didn't go all that well, but that's because I wasn't well prepared, I gathered stuff last minute, and where I thought I had stuff to sell, turns out there really wasn't all that much. Clearly next time I need to be better prepared.
I'm also using a we buy books type app to sell off his massive book collection. The good news, they're buying 592 books. The bad news? I have to pack those to ship to them, that's going to be a barrel of laughs. It took about 4 days to scan and key all those in, and I've stopped working to focus on it. Their prices are kinda crap, but they cover shipping, so what do you expect? Also they'll likely reject some of the books, so the promised money will drop, but honestly, shrinking the collection is kinda more important than the money. When I have this batch gone, I use another app, and then when that one is done, I'll use another one, and after that, anything left will be sold at the flea market or dropped into free libraries along my deliver routes. Or maybe sell on WhatNot.Now with that said, there is a collection I need to figure out what to do with, and that's magazines. Some like Asimov and Analog, relatively easy, if nothing else I'll set up shop on WhatNot and sell them or the flea market, but there's also a lot of pagan magazines like RFD, Green Egg and others, some body art magazines, as well as some gay porn and a few issues of Advocate. Sure, I could just pulp them, but that seems a shame, they do reflect the culture of the time, I kinda feel they should be preserved, but I'm not real interested in doing so.

It took at least four tries but I've finally achieved pretty much the effect I was shooting for.
As usual, it'll get darker in the next 24 hours or so.
This is a product of henna staying on skin for ten hours or so.
Terping (that is, adding tea tree essential oil) does darken the hue. As does wrapping the arm in plastic foil, I think.
I'm definitely doing more designs elsewhere! And I still want to do henna freckles on my face, but I'm still a bit chicken xD plus the next batch of henna is still "ripening".
