This is amazing. I remember hearing this interview of #BobMould by #TerryGross when it first aired in 1994, 31 years ago. I remember exactly where I was, I remember the weather outside, and I remember this exact question. It is amazing that this archive is preserved.

The prompt is #Alone#TheSmithereens “Alone at Midnight” from "Especially for You,"1986
#Smithereens never hid their influences, #BritishInvasion #PowerPop especially early #Kinks and #TheWho, but their music never sounds dated; the standout track “Blood and Roses” was regarded as so cool and modern upon its release, it was used to great effect in an otherwise-wordless opening scene of an episode of #MiamiVice. (Move over, #PhilCollins.)
There’s a luminous quality to #PatDiNizio’s vocals - I hear a little #MickeyDolenz, a little #BobMould (which is not a bad delineation of their musical territory), but uniquely his own; Mike Mesaros’s #BassLines offer countermelodies. An occasional dash of #tambourine with the solid drumming adds some #60s energy, their chord progressions both hint at and evoke yearning, and of course there are those jangling/biting guitars. These elements all come together on “Alone at Midnight.”
