Hi, I’m Hungry-Man-Sized Casey Kasem and welcome to another music listicle, but not a Top Ten because I didn't buy that many! As part of my annual series of chronically late year-in-review entries, I remain one of six people nationwide who still prefers compact discs to digital downloads. My hangups about vinyl would require a separate essay unto themselves, though I finally waded into some of that last year. My new-album splurges are rare because: (a) it’s increasingly tougher for new music to catch my ear as I grow older and more finicky; and (b) my favorite yesteryear acts died, stopped recording, or swiveled in directions away from me. That usually means missing out on what majorities loves, thus further dropping me down the bottomless wishing well into total irrelevance as chronicled on this very website, thirteen years and counting. In 2025 I got six brand new studio albums, omitting any pre-2025 finds or gifts. It can be fun to walk past the cool-collectors’ vinyl bins to the way-back by the T-shirt rack and pick through what passes for in-person CD sections today, though I’m seeing diminishing returns as those get smaller and dustier, sometimes not even alphabetized. More often than not, More and more, I'm resorting to online disc-shopping because all of Indy's coolest stores are on other sides of town faraway from us, and the stores we stumble across in our road trips aren't stocking new stuff I like. Or maybe it's all selling out before I come in? I wouldn't know, but I feel like these artists would be much bigger today if that were the case. Nevertheless, on with the countdown! […] -

An absolute magnum opus, and a mind-boggling masterpiece.
It seems a bit cheap to call what Husker Du did “punk”.
It was always so much more than that.None of their contemporaries were doing what they were doing at the level they were doing it at.
The fury, yes.
But also the melodies, the songwriting, the absolute surgeon-like skill from all three dudes on their instruments.
Not just ONE brilliant songwriter in Mould, but TWO of them, with Grant Hart as well.A desert island album for me, for sure, and probably the one I re-listen to the most on a year to year basis.
I need to find a replacement OG pressing. Mine is beat to shit from my 30 years of spinning it.

Ok, time for some music talk. When Bob Mould’s band Sugar released Copper Blue I was neck deep in completing my masters, teaching full time, planning my wedding, and attempting to buy my first house. Needless to say, a lot was happening in my life. I would study every night for my comps with it playing in the background for 4 hours at a stretch. I created mnemonic devices with the lyrics to help me recall 75 (yes really 75) citations of literacy research. During the exam I sang silently to myself and crushed it. Yesterday, I bought tics to see the Sugar reunion tour in August. That album kept me sane in a time of great challenge. I can’t wait to see Bob and Co do this album live again. Music is the magic I’ve always needed. #BobMould #sugarcopperblue

[Savage Young Du box set version]This is where my love for my hero Bob Mould and Husker Du began. As a kid, I blind bought the Everything Falls Apart And More cd (the expanded one with the blue cover), because the older brother of a friend of mine told me they were essential listening.
I think I ended up buying something like 6 copies of it over time, due to either wear, people stealing it, etc.
The title track, Gravity, Target, the Sunshine Superman cover.
Those four songs would inform the rest of my music-going life; not just as a listener, but as a musician & songwriter myself.Without hyperbole, Bob Mould gave me a purpose in life. Flash forward past the Husker albums, his solo records, Sugar… & here I stand.
I’m not who I am without Bob.
Not possible without him.
