Rainbows Through the Grey Blanket by Melu Crochet

A lovely rainbow blanket that’s not just for children! Made in a large adult size, perfect for cosying up in comfort on grey days.

It uses chunky yarn, so it works up quickly and is very satisfying to make despite its size. Large enough to use as a sofa throw or an adult bed blanket, it’s both practical and cosy, combining a tasteful, plain base with pops of colour and texture to keep things interesting.

A step-by-step photo guide is included to help you create the bobbles, so you can enjoy the making process just as much as the finished blanket.

Ziggy Pop Blanket pattern by Melu Crochet

Wrap up warm with this cosy winter crochet project! The Here Comes the Snow Scarf is a soft, stylish triangle scarf that’s perfect for chilly days and handmade gifts. This design is the wintry sister to my popular Here Comes the Sun Scarf, using the same simple, no-waste construction with a frosty twist.

After creating the bright and cheerful Here Comes the Sun Scarf, I wanted to make something that captured the quieter side of the seasons. Think soft snow, frosty mornings, and a cup of tea by the fire. The result is the Here Comes the Snow Scarf, a lovely follow-up design that’s perfect for wrapping up warm when the weather turns chilly.

Whether you are heading out for a winter walk or looking for a thoughtful handmade gift, this pattern is sure to bring a touch of cosy comfort.

The Here Comes the Snow Scarf is a side-to-side triangular crochet scarf that uses the same easy construction as the Here Comes the Sun Scarf. You start small, increase to the peak, and then decrease again to finish.

And yes, the mini pom-poms are back! They add a pretty, playful edging that gives the scarf a lovely snowball effect.

It looks beautiful in soft neutral shades for a classic winter feel, but it would work just as well in colour-changing or textured yarns if you fancy something a bit different.

The finished scarf measures around 155cm (61 inches) long and 25.5cm (10 inches) wide, including the pom-poms.

It is worked from side to side, increasing until you reach the height you like at the triangle’s apex and then decreasing again.

To make sure you do not run out of yarn:
Use the first 50g skein for the increase section.
Use the second 50g skein for the decrease section.

This means there is no waste and every bit of your yarn is put to good use.

You can also use different yarn weights if you prefer. Simply adjust your hook size to suit your chosen yarn, keeping in mind that this will change the overall size of the finished piece.

I have designed it as a beginner friendly pattern but I am happy for all abilities to give it a try.

This pattern has previously been featured in Crochet Now magazine, but I have modified it to suit my usual pattern writing style and I want to check it before I release it in my own shops.

6.5mm hook

740g chunky yarn, 

I used Stylecraft Special Chunky; 144m per 100g ball; 100% premium acrylic

550 Silver 1203 (MC)

10g Fondant 1241 (CC1),

30g Lavender 1188 (CC2),

15g Aster 1003 (CC3), 

40g Aspen 1422 (CC4),

20g Saffron 1081 (CC5),

50g Spice 1711 (CC6)

25g Pomegranate 1083 (CC7) 

Yarn Needle

2 stitch markers

Size

Finished blanket measures approx 120cm (width) x 105cm (height)  (47 x 41.5 inches), ideal for an adult sized sofa blanket or bed throw  

Why?

I like to get all of my patterns tested so that I can make sure the sizes and amount of yarn needed are accurate, and that the instructions are correctly written. This makes them easier to follow for the user and gives you confidence that the time and effort you are putting into crocheting a Melu Crochet pattern is going to be satisfying and your project will turn out beautifully.

What I will need from you:

FEEDBACK!! I really want my patterns to be easily understood and accessible for as many people as possible, so all feedback is gratefully received, even when it might be a bit awkward! Things like “are you sure this is supposed to be here” or “I don’t know what you mean by this” with a screenshot or a photo of the bit you are confused about is exactly what I need, because if you are confused by it, then someone else will be too. My shops are international so even though the patterns are written in English, there might be a bit of Bristolian (UK City where I’m from) seeping in somewhere or turn of phrase, or even a crocheting term that a beginner won’t know what I’m going on about!! Also spelling and typos of course.

I ask you to provide photos of your progress and some photos of the finished piece, using yourself or a family member/friend as a model. I’d love to showcase your work and also show real people using my crochet designs on my website, etsy, instagram, facebook etc. so by sending me the photos you will be giving me permission to use them on my social media.

I ask you to keep a record of how much yarn you have used to make your item and the name, brand and colour. I love people getting creative with the patterns and choosing different colour schemes and brands, it can change the look of the item dramatically!

I would like all of your photos and feedback sent to me via email.

What next?

Once you have applied for a pattern test I will select testers and email you back to let you know if you have been successful or not. Do not be disheartened if you are not selected, I have lots of applications and it gets a bit hard to manage if I say yes to everyone (which I used to do because I felt bad, but it got a bit messy!)

Autumn Breeze Scarf by Melu Crochet

Crazy Hexi Cool Cardi – Fio Version!

Here is my finished Crazy Hexi Cool Cardi, made with this pretty Fio yarn, sent to me to try by Hobbii 😍

This is colour Lemon & Lime (06) which is really bright and lovely 💚💛

I’m really pleased with the drape, stitch definition and colour. I have used 8 x 50g skeins and a 4.5mm hook to make the M/L size 😁

My testers have thoroughly checked the pattern and have helped me to make it easy to read and understand. It is an intermediate level pattern, beginners may find it a bit tricky but as long as you concentrate on the stitch counts you’ll be fine!

Here Comes The Sun Scarf by Melu Crochet

A Fun & Easy Crochet Triangle Scarf – Perfect for Color-Changing Yarn!

I had so much fun taking part in the Hobbii challenge, and as soon as I got my hands on this gorgeous Colorina yarn, I knew I wanted to create something that really showed off its beautiful colour changes! That’s how this triangle scarf came to life – with mini pom-poms to add a fun and pretty edging and a design that lets the sun shine right through. 🌞

What You’ll Need:

Yarn: 100g DK (light, category 3) I used Hobbii Colorina – Spring Street (11)
Hook: 5.5mm
Extras: Yarn needle

How It Works:

This scarf is made from side to side, growing in size until you reach the peak of the triangle, then decreasing back down. I used one skein for increasing and the second skein for decreasing—so no yarn goes to waste!

Final Size: 229cm (90 inches) long x 30cm (12 inches) wide (including the mini pom-poms).

The Hobbii Challenge

Here is my #HereComesTheSun project, for a challenge by @hobbii_yarn ‘to draw inspiration from the color that reminds us the most of Easter ✨ YELLOW ✨ ‘
I’ve taken so much inspiration from this yarn, the colour sequence works so well with a side to side construction! I have used a filet to add small holes that the sun shines through and modified the usual bobble pom poms to be smaller. I’m really enjoying it! ☀️😁🙌.

Ok to be honest when I first heard of this challenge I was a bit unsure of what I would do, my first thoughts were ‘oh no yellow!’ But when I thought about it a bit more and looked at all my projects I realised that I use lots of different shades of yellow and I really like mustard! 💛

As you can probably tell I am very ‘in’ to colour changing yarn, and when I saw this gorgeous Colorina it was the answer to my problem. I really like colour changing yarn as it help helps you create something coordinated and well blended without the worry of picking out colours and making sure they go together and never forget- only two ends 🤣👏🙌
I’m really inspired by this yarn and am excited to get experimenting!

Also I have been singing “Here comes the Sun” ever since I have been asked to do this! (Sorry family 🎶👩🏻‍🎤🤣)

I’ve enjoyed experimenting with this beautiful @hobbii_yarn Colorina, a mini bobble pom pom is evolving!!

Materials 

5.5mm hook- I used FURLS Streamline Teak Crochet Hook

2 x 50g Hobbii Colorina yarn – I used Spring Street (11)

Yarn Needle

Size

This triangular pattern is worked from side to side, increasing until you have the desired height at the apex of the triangle, and then decreasing. The scarf in the photo was made using 2 skeins of Hobbii Colorina with a 5.5mm hook. Use the first 50g for the increase, and then use the second 50g for the decrease – this will make sure there is no waste and you don’t run out. At the apex there are 42 tr stitches, giving a measurement for the scarf of 229cm (90 inch) x 30cm (12 inch) (including mini pom poms). 

This is a quick and easy pattern, the pom pom edging is worked as you go along so it is a great pattern for using colour change yarn, as the pompoms will match the colour of your stripes. Unlike tassels or sewn on pom-poms, you don’t need to worry about them coming off.

Double stranded!

Any yarn weight can be used, hook size should be adjusted accordingly for the recommended size for your yarn- but remember this will affect the finished size. To ensure you make the most of a special skein, weigh it, half the weight then use the first half of the skein for the increase, second half of the skein for the decrease. 

The following three scarves use the same pattern as my Here Comes the Sun scarf, but they use two balls of Colorina yarn held together. They weigh the same as the original, due to the yarn being thicker (because it is double stranded) however, you have fewer repeats and therefore it takes about a quarter of the time to make! 🙌

I know I go on about ENDS but I love a project that doesn’t create many- this one is particularly good- only 2!!! (Well 4 if you count the double strands, but you sew them at the same time so I’m not counting them 😁)

This version is crocheted in the fabulous Universe XL Halloween Zombie Planet (03) I just used 1 100g skein for this one but the pattern allows you to use the whole of a skein by weighing it, then using half for the increase, then the other half for the decrease – no waste 🙌😁

Granny Over the Rainbow Blanket by Melu Crochet

This blanket is made from two of the crocheting world’s favourite things- grannies and rainbows! It is the latest in my Rainbow range which I have designed to be fun to make, and easily adapted you your own colour scheme. It uses treble crochet throughout with a lovely bobble stitch edging (because I just love a bobble stitch!)
