  1. #Boasting is a prominent theme in 2 Corinthians; Paul's "thesis" featured the Corinthian #Christians as his boast/pride on the day of the Lord, and how the Corinthian Christians should make him their boast/pride as well (2 Corinthians 1:12-14).

But not all boasting is good.

Commending one another without reference to the Lord Jesus makes #arrogant and does not truly build up.

  3. A quotation from Hannah Arendt

For the propaganda of totalitarian movements which precede and accompany totalitarian regimes is invariably as frank as it is mendacious, and would-be totalitarian rulers usually start their careers by boasting of their past crimes and carefully outlining their future ones. The Nazis were “convinced that evil-doing in our time has a morbid force of attraction,” Bolshevik assurances inside and outside Russia that they do not recognize ordinary moral standards have become a mainstay of Communist propaganda, and experience has proven time and again that the propaganda value of evil deeds and general contempt for moral standards is independent of mere self-interest, supposedly the most powerful psychological factor in politics.

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) German-American philosopher, political theorist
The Origins of Totalitarianism, Part 3, ch. 10 “A Classless Society,” sec. 1 (1951)

  14. 2/🧵When Kash Patel, the F.B.I. director, gave a status report on his agency’s work in mid-October in the Oval Office, he effused: “These are the best numbers for fighting crime in U.S. history.” He used “historic” less than a minute later, and another “historic” less than a minute after that. As Shakespeare might have written, methinks he doth “historic” too much.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, giving a status report of his own at a cabinet meeting two weeks ago, pronounced: “It has been a historic year at the Department of War.” He added that “the spirit in our ranks” was “unprecedented” and that recruitment and retention were “at the most historic levels our country has ever seen.” Not just historic — most historic. —Frank Bruni, NYTimes #Trump #TrumpRegime #Republicans #bragging #boasting #character #USPol

  19. Trump and his team exuberantly violate just about every precept of character that I was ever taught, and so it goes with moderation and humility. They’ve normalized bragging. Scratch that: They’ve fetishized it. It’s a naughtiness they allow themselves, a perk they accord themselves, a rite by which they identify themselves to one another as birds of a feather — peacocks, in this case. It’s a competition: My superlatives are bigger than yours. —Frank Bruni, NYTimes #Bragging #character #braggart #boasting #Trump #TrumpRegime #USPol

A strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to be gentle, firm, thoughtful, and restrained. It can afford to extend a helping hand to others. It’s a weak nation, like a weak person, that must behave with bluster and boasting and rashness and other signs of insecurity.

  29. A quotation from Marcus Aurelius

As a horse when he has run, a dog when he has tackled the game, a bee when it has made the honey, so a man when he has done a good act does not call out for others to come and see, but he goes on to another act, as a vine goes on to produce again the grapes in season.

  39. All the things I do…

...and I still sometimes feel... ...like I haven't done enough... For a while now, I have been writing some sort of "Journal" type posts here on this blog. They've been in different forms, but the last year or so (maybe even longer, I didn't really check when I started writing this), I have been sharing my journal posts on Tuesdays. 43. Very much a fan of this piece on the dying virtue of modesty, by David Mitchell: "I’m not saying that you shouldn’t give a good account of yourself in a job interview. There’s a time and a place. Job interviews are atypical human interactions, awkward but necessary, where the usual conventions about how to behave are suspended. Like rectal examinations. But we need to be sparing with such exceptions or you end up with the Oscars." theguardian.com/commentisfree/ #boasting #PutASockInThatTrumpet
