  1. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐗🐇 On #Okunoshima, #Japan’s #bunny island, tourist feeding has pushed the #ecosystem past its limits.

Visitors bring roughly 27 tons of #food in peak seasons, far beyond the roughly 3.4 tons the #island can sustain, thinning #vegetation and driving #rabbits to toxic #plants. Wild #boars now hunt rabbits, but the real issue is the feeding system itself.

  2. As the birds are keeping more quiet and hidden in August due to the heat and molting and some that went south already, we went to look for some larger animals!
One of our goal subjects last Sunday were the boars in #Kroondomein het Loo

  3. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐇🐗 Researchers at #Fukushima University documented how unregulated tourist feeding on #Okunoshima Island allowed rabbit populations to exceed natural carrying capacity.

The overgrazing stripped local vegetation while tourist #foodwaste attracted wild #boars that began scavenging carcasses and hunting live #rabbits.

  6. A more humane policy would start prioritizing non-lethal preventative measures, and no longer viewing wild #animals primarily as a nuisance in legislation and enforcement, but rather as co-inhabitants of #ecosystem s; this includes stricter rules for international meat trade, effective education instead of symbolic politics at the expense of wild #boars, and legal guidelines that include recreational hunting in the discussion as part of the problem.

  7. 🐗🐖 What happens to the #animals left behind after a #nuclear disaster? In #Fukushima, escaped domestic #pigs and wild #boars are interbreeding at a rapid pace.

While they aren't "mutants," these hybrids are rewriting the local gene pool, inheriting the fast breeding cycles of their farm-raised ancestors to thrive in a landscape without humans.

  8. 🇨🇦 ⚠️ It is now illegal to keep, buy, sell, obtain or transport wild boars in Alberta without a permit. That also means no new wild boar farms will be permitted in the province.

The hunting and trapping of wild boars in Alberta is banned as well, with the exception of land owners or occupants killing the animals on their own land. Any person who kills a wild boar is now required to report the date, location and number of boars killed to the province as soon as possible.

  9. Do you know what a teaser boar is? 🤔 These are male animals used by the animal agriculture industry to detect when females are in heat, forced to live as tools for breeding, not as the individuals they are. 💔 #VeganFTA #Pigs #Boars

  11. 2) BOARS🐗

Boars are familiars of Marishiten (摩利支天), goddess of 'victory and abundance'.

Pale-faced and brightly garbed, Marishiten is seen riding seven golden boars. She was particularly popular with warriors, and is worshipped at Kennin-ji's sub-temple Zenkyo-an (禅居庵 aka Marishiten-dō 摩利支天堂).

  12. As he stood marveling, the old monk appeared once more and revealed himself to be the god of the mountain, Achisaka Myōjin (阿智坂明神), in disguise.

No sooner had Achisaka Myōjin stopped speaking than he transformed into an offering slip and was whisked away by a sacred wind to the mountain summit (where he resided).

Through the divine help of thousands of boars, Yoshimine-dera (善峯寺) was born🐗🐗🐗🐗

  13. Simona Kossak (1943–2007) was a Polish scientist, ecologist and environmental activist who dedicated her life to protecting the Białowieża Primeval Forest, the oldest forest in Europe. She was an extraordinary and fascinating personality, known for her close connection to nature and animals.

The locals often called her a "witch" because she lived in the seclusion of the forest and seemed to have a special relationship with the animals. Her pet "terror crow" was known for stealing gold and attacking cyclists - an anecdote that is often told. She lived in her small wooden hut, which had neither electricity nor running water, for over 30 years. A lynx occasionally slept in her bed, and a tame wild boar shared her home.

  14. 🌫️SMOKE TO PIG🐷

In the Edo period it was common to use smoke as a simple mosquito repellant, but as most buildings were made of paper and wood many people in built up areas were concerned about naked flames.

Boars, as familiars of the fire deity, became linked to fire protection.

  15. In the region #Berlin/#Brandenburg you don't find any stones, besides those brought there by humans.

Every stone there once was has been crumbled to dust by the advancing and retreating glaciers of the last ice age.

In the Middle Ages, the extremely fine white sand earned the region the name "The Holy Roman Empire's sandbox".

Whilst bears (which gave Berlin her coat of arms) have been eradicated by hunters in the XVI/XVII century, #wolves and wild #boars still roam these forests.

  16. #Europe’s #Boars Still Hold #Radioactivity. What Surprised Scientists Is Why.
Some wild #boar hunted in #German forests have radiation levels that exceed the limit deemed safe for human consumption. New research suggests that it’s not just because of #Chernobyl. Why is the radiation in the wild boar population relatively high, when most other wildlife are uncontaminated, many generations after the accident? (Spoiler: It’s because they eat deer truffles.)
