Anyone giving #Mastodon another go after the current #bluesky... uh developments, I'm happy to report that they appear to have (finally) fixed the issue where the server wouldn't search the fediverse for other replies, so you'd get:
- 0-1 replies on everyone else's posts
- 500 people replying the same thing on your postnight and day difference. that one little oversight made it feel like it was a wasteland, until you asked a question and then a million people seemingly reply-guyed out of nowhere

It's been a while, but it seems that it is probably a good time to visit the #introduction hashtag again and welcome new arrivals from #Bluesky.
Doing an introduction post and even adding a few of your interests as hashtags will make it easier to find likeminded people... I know, not hashtags.. but they do work in this situation. Good luck.

If your feed looks empty, I recommend following @hypebot - it checks multiple instances and boosts high quality trending posts. Really helps with discovery when you're starting out.
Also, @FediTips runs https://fedi.tips/ which has tons of helpful guides about Mastodon and the fediverse in general.

I’ll go first - one of my first jobs was developing photos in the lab at a one-hour photo store in the 90s. I was 16! I have so, so many cool and horrible stories from that place 😏🫣🤣

It was head-spinning the alacrity with which people abandoned #mastodon for #BlueSky !
Maybe it had something to do with BluSky having started as invite only. The “cool kids” felt left out, so they raced to join at the first opportunity.
Us nerds stayed put (maybe cuz we’re used to feeling left out but also cuz we’re a little smarter than the average bear & not blinded by what the in-crowd does). 🤷🏼♀️ -

There is no algorithm here so we encourage lots of following and “retweeting”. You can also follow #hashtags as well.
Posts are sometimes called toots. Retweets are sometimes called boosts or retoots.
If you want people to follow you, be sure to have a profile picture, something in your description about you, and some engagement: posts, comments, stars, boosts. People also usually do a post that is an introduction to them (be sure to use a hashtag, #introduction) and it can help to pin that to your profile so people can boost it.

Now that BlueSky is open to everyone and the trolls are gonna swarm in, do you think the Fediverse will experience a #BlueSkyMigration ?
Or not... BlueSky is not relevant enough to attract trolls in the first place?
It looks like I'm shitting on BlueSky but don't get mistaken I use it too (kind of...) And honestly, it has some good ideas. I'm thinking about the possibility of having a domain name as your username (which allows you to keep that username even if you migrate to another instance), the custom feeds (which I don't use, but maybe I would if they were not public... oh yeah, everything is public on BlueSky don't go there if you expect some sort of privacy)
Now, it does have one major drawback: not wanting anything to do with ActivityPub.
Oh well...
