This morning, while browsing through some of my photographs from Costa Maya, Mexico, I stumbled upon a few that at first glance looked like nothing more than a dark tangle of leaves. I assumed they were accidental shots and nearly deleted them—until something caught my eye. “Wait a minute… what’s that?” Nestled in the shadows was a bird. Based on the shape and coloring, I believe it’s a blue-gray tanager (Thraupis episcopus)—at least that’s what Merlin suggests. Still, I’d appreciate help confirming or correcting the ID. The online photos show a similar bird, though many feature a lighter blue body than the one I captured.

I originally wrote the following a couple of years ago, and I've just noticed something interesting—the bird in the photograph has captured an insect of some sort!

While going through some of my photographs from Costa Maya, Mexico this morning, I stumbled upon a few that initially appeared to be nothing more than a dark cluster of leaves. My first thought was that I must have taken these photos by accident. I was just about to delete them when something caught my eye—wait a minute, what’s that? Upon closer inspection, I realized there was a bird in the photos! I believe the bird might be a blue-gray tanager (Thraupis episcopus), based on an ID I found using Merlin.

I was going through some of my photographs from Costa Maya, Mexico this morning, when I came across some that just looked like a dark bunch of leaves. My initial thought was that I accidentally took the pictures. I was about to delete them when I thought: wait a minute, what's that? There was a bird in the photos. I think the bird is a blue-gray tanager (Thraupis episcopus) (using Merlin ), but I can use some help confirming or correcting the identity the photos online look similar but with a light blue body.

"The blue-gray tanager is a medium-sized South American songbird of the tanager family, Thraupidae. Its range is from Mexico south to northeast Bolivia and northern Brazil, all of the Amazon Basin, except the very south. It has been introduced to Lima (Peru). On Trinidad and Tobago, this bird is called blue jean." - wikipedia.org
