Mist on a Branch
A blue-gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) visited a few days ago, threading through the crepe myrtles with quiet urgency, hunting insects like punctuation in the foliage.

Poised in Blue-Gray
This blue-gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) dropped by some time ago. Maybe it was hunting spiders among the crepe myrtles, or just curious about the commotion of birds in the area. Hmmm... I think I may have photographed one before and mistaken it for a tufted titmouse. I’ll need to dig through the old photos and check.
My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

The Fluff Awakens
II bet I got two dozen good images of this blue-gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea). Then came the hard part—choosing just one to post this morning. I settled on this shot, which, interestingly enough, was the very first I took. I chose it because I happened to catch the tiny bird with its plumage in disarray at that exact moment. Normally, its feathers are sleek and smooth.

Blue-Gray Delight
A blue-gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) made an appearance in my backyard this morning, darting energetically among the branches. There might have been two, but it's hard to tell since they move around so quickly. These tiny birds are smaller than a chickadee yet slightly larger than a hummingbird, making their swift movements even more captivating.

Ethereal Gnatcatcher
"This blue-gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) was a summer visitor. One morning, my camera lens fogged up, creating some fascinating effects. This caused the world around the bird to appear dreamy. The green haze is from the forest in the background."
"The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher's grayish coloring and long tail, as well as the way it mixes snippets of other birds' repertoires into its own high, nasal songs, have earned it the nickname "Little Mockingbird."" - Copilot

Good morning, friends. 💮🐦💮
7 August 2024
Well, my fence is clean, today somebody is coming to repair the door on my small garage where I keep my lawn mower, motorcycle, tools, yada yada yada, and there is some storage. The repair of the garage is a self-created expanse, I ran into the bottom of the door with the Topp of my rollbar while backing my lawn mower into the garage. It misaligned the bottom rollers and gaggled up the cables on both sides, so I had to loosed both roller wheels, which took the tension out of the tension-spring. Messing with the tension-spring is not something that I want to do - it can be dangerous. So, I'm paying for my lack of attention.

Tiny Bug Hunter
There was a blue-gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) fluttering in and around my crepe myrtles this morning. At one point, I thought that I saw a hummingbird chasing the gnatcatcher. Anyway, here are two photos, I couldn't decide which one to post this morning so I'm posting both. The first one is clearer I think, but there is something about the second that I find appealing. I took the second photo just after going outside into the humid weather and the lens was fogged up.

First time seeing a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher with my own eyes. I managed two photos, this one and a super blurry one. I’m A-OK with this for a first photo.

There is something under here.
Here is a little blue gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) hunting prey under the grass.
She's a female, I think, or maybe a nonbreeding male. Males have a distinct black eyebrow."The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher's grayish coloring and long tail, as well as the way it mixes snippets of other birds' repertoires into its own high, nasal songs, have earned it the nickname "Little Mockingbird."" - allabutbirds.org

Hunter in the grass.
This tiny Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) was right outside the backdoor hunting in the grass. I had to take this shot through the storm door (in America, a storm door is an outer door made of glass).
"Blue-gray Gnatcatchers eat small insects, spiders, and other invertebrates. Prey species vary across their extensive range. In the Southwest, for example, prey include treehoppers, froghoppers, leaf hoppers, plant bugs, tree bugs, leaf beetles, weevils, wolf spiders, caterpillars, and grasshoppers. In the Northeast, adult and larval moths can provide up to half of prey taken. The smallest prey are swallowed alive. The wings are torn off larger prey and their bodies beaten on a perch prior to being eaten. Parents generally feed the young these same foods, offering progressively larger whole prey as the chicks mature." - allaboutbirds.org

Sleek bird.
This blue-gray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) visited yesterday. Perhaps it was foraging for spiders among the crepe myrtles. Or maybe it was just curious about all of the birds around that area. Hmmm ... I think I may have photographed one of these before and mistook it for a tufted titmouse. I'll have to review old photos.
"A tiny, long-tailed bird of broadleaf forests and scrublands, the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher makes itself known by its soft but insistent calls and its constant motion. It hops and sidles in dense outer foliage, foraging for insects and spiders. As it moves, this steely blue-gray bird conspicuously flicks its white-edged tail from side to side, scaring up insects and chasing after them. Pairs use spiderweb and lichens to build small, neat nests, which sit on top of branches and look like tree knots." - allaboutbirds.org
