So, they're giving the checks to people who don't want it and won't let them hide it. Sounds like they're trying to make the Blue Check a positive thing in the eyes of the public, not a stain like it is now.

He def had plans to make Twitter Nazi friendly but thought he could make $. His Saudi backers (aligned w/ Putin’s goals) just want it destroyed as a place for Dems to organize.They used his colossal ego to manipulate him into the deal. Okay, yeah, I'm starting to find it a little weird that a bunch of people put little blue checkmarks in their display names.

I feel that the Twitter "verification" system was pretty arbitrary and badly handled, and now it has become a "pay for a checkmark" system. Not quite sure why people want to be carrying around that baggage.
