  1. SANBS Blood Scandal: Donor Exploitation, Reform Needed

The Blood Money Scandal: SANBS Profits While Donors Bleed Dry The lifeblood of South Africa flows through its people. Yet, the system that collects, processes, and distributes this precious resource is steeped in injustice. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is a private non-profit or... 3. Why in practice blood transfusion only takes place between people with the same blood groups?

Even if it is theoretically possible to transfuse blood from patients with one blood type to patients with another blood type, in such cases some of the blood is inactivated by the recipient's antibodies!

  4. Who discovered the AB0 blood group system?

This system was discovered in 1900 by the German doctor Karl Landsteiner, who, by mixing the blood of different people, discovered that only certain types of blood could be mixed with a certain transfusion.
For this discovery he received the Nobel Prize in 1930.
He discovered two antigens that are on the surface of red blood cells, and called them A and B.

  5. There’s still a lot of confusion, even fear about blood transfusions such as from #vaccinated donors. Most donors will have been vaccinated and blood centres will not maintain separate batches. Let’s go over it with facts. #BloodTransfusion

  6. Antigens and blood compatibility tests

There are many types of antigens (twenty for red blood cells alone).
Antigens that belong to the same category form what we call a blood group.
Several classifications of blood groups are known, but not all have the same importance for transfusion.
The compatibility analysis for the same group is carried out taking into account only two categories of antigens, the so-called ABO and Rhesus systems.

  7. A study finds that a maternal high-fat diet programmes offspring for atherosclerosis through persistent epigenetic memory.

Meanwhile, lab-grown universal red blood cells are now entering clinical trials for novel enzymatic treatments that strip antigen barriers, promising a donor-independent blood supply and safer, more equitable transfusions worldwide.

  8. Its a great initiative - but I really don’t think the trials of using drones to transport blood for #bloodtransfusion can be described as a ‘pilot’ project

  9. One of the things I wonder about is the effect of blood transfusions and organ transplants when the donor has had COVID. What about if the donor has had COVID multiple times? What will that do to the recipient? #covid #BloodTransfusion #OrganTransplant

  10. I was initially stunned, until I realized the demand that the Canadian Blood Service bow to misinformation and conspiracy theories should have been predictable.
