In the summer of '66 I was 13 years old. My grandparents had given me a small GE portable AM radio. A palm size unit like in Dave Alvin's "9 Volt Heart"
At night I to go to sleep with the radio hanging on the curtain rod in my room. It's single ear plug secure in my ear listening to far off stations. Stations in Cincinnati, Cleveland, or Chicago. I heard all the great music, in mono, through that device.
One evening stands out. This guy with an imperfect voice singing about how "everybody must get stoned". I was listening to "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35". This was something very different and it drew me in.
Saturday afternoon in my grandparents home was dominated with The Wilbur Brothers, Porter Wagoner and The Grand Ole Opry with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Dylan guy seemed to fit into that same realm. Yet, very different. It would be a few years before I had the musical savvy to truly appreciate how much he actually did "fit in" with those Nashville icons.
Now I can't definitively identify any other tune I recall listening to that year. I listened to everything. But Dylan stands out.
Thankfully.

#NowListening to #BlondeOnBlonde by #BobDylan, cut in mono by #RyanKSmith from today’s #VinylMePlease haul.
This is my 2nd listen & my only mono. The #VMP stands up well to my 1st UK stereo press and proves a compelling listen, cohesion, punch, & natural bass.
The #MobileFidelity, cut at 45, has more space, more detail - but it’s a silly comparison. That #MoFi doesn’t sound like any other version I’ve heard. Plus, it’s cut in stereo, at 45, from DSD.

This is my first #VMP bundle &, despite my aversion to subscription models, I’ve been sucked in by #RyanKSmith’s mono cut of #BlondeOnBlonde (perhaps my favourite Dylan album) & the 2023 offer of up to 8 free records with every subscription. I went with 6 months for 4 free records.
So far, everything is in order - no seam splits - I’m looking forward to listening.

This is my first #VMP bundle &, despite my aversion to subscription models, I’ve been sucked in by #RyanKSmith’s mono cut of #BlondeOnBlonde (perhaps my favourite Dylan album) & the 2023 offer of up to 8 free records with every subscription. I went with 6 months for 4 free records.
So far, everything is in order - no seam splits - I’m looking forward to listening.

Inspired right here, I’m #listening to #BlondeOnBlonde by #BobDylan - an #album which is as close to perfect as it gets.
This is the #MobileFidelity 45 & is the best that I’ve heard this album sound. The trade off is that you lose the iconic gatefold & flip the disks twice as often. It’s worth it (imo) for the better instrument separation, soundstage, & definition in the low end. It doesn’t quite sound like the OG & so I do enjoy listening to both.
