  1. Books fall apart. Literally. 📚

Old paperbacks, book repair, libraries as archives, and what it means to preserve books in an age when so much knowledge is endlessly mutable.

A small revolution: keeping the books alive.

  5. We wrapped our 6-film 90s international indie series on Family Pictures Podcast with Gianni Amelio’s *Il ladro di bambini*.

What started as a tour through some great films turned into something much more interesting: a running argument about family, the state, corruption, class, institutions, and what happens when systems stop serving the people they were designed for.

  9. Back in 2009, @twoodwar, @blamb, and I did a bit called Uncanny Learning in which I played a salesman from the future selling “education insurance” because higher ed had gotten completely out of control.

Fast forward to 2026, and I just got an email offering tuition insurance for my daughter’s college.

    The future is stupid.

  13. New Couch to 4K! This time Mike Caulfield and I talk Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva (1981), the death throes of the gritty 1970s aesthetic, Blow Out, Body Double, and the emergence of the slick, object-fetishizing 1980s.

Mike brings the film theory; I bring the high-dollar fact checking :)

  17. A bit late, but that’s how it goes in the dog-eat-god world of blogging :)

On July 28th, Reclaim Hosting finished its 13th year in business. Thirteen years! Still kind of unbelievable.

A quick post about dumb luck, good people, gratitude, and everyone who has helped make this weird little adventure possible.

  21. New. blog post: "Polyphemus" bavatuesdays.com/polyphemus/ Finally caught Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in IMAX. Loved it—but what really got me was Polyphemus and the practical-effects lineage running through Ray Harryhausen and, maybe, Mario Bava. A little speculation about Cyclopes, Italian TV, Ulysses, and how culture is always talking to itself. #blaugust #blogging4life #TheOdyssey #ChristopherNolan #MarioBava #RayHarryhausen #Film youtu.be/xhGWo-RVHx4?si=UUkKc2

More thoughts on contemporary politics and the growing sense that something is missing from what's currently on offer.

  29. NEW POST: Culture is Complex
    heartsoulmachine.com/blog/2026
One of the things I keep coming back to is how poorly we understand culture as a system – and how that misunderstanding shapes the way we respond when something goes wrong.

  32. NEW POST: Labor are the new conservatives
    heartsoulmachine.com/blog/2026
When the political party, with its roots in the labour movement, no longer represents workers' needs, what has it become? With a lack of ideas and an agenda devoid of progress and change, I'd suggest that it's now the conservative party.
