  1. "There’s a joke in #BlazingSaddles, about an event that took place several thousand years ago, that maybe hasn’t aged so well.

It’s in the scene where #HarveyKorman’s conniving Attorney General #HedleyLamarr brainstorms plans to clear away the town of Rock Ridge. #Lamarr’s lackey #Taggart, played by #SlimPickens, makes a modest proposal: “We’ll kill the firstborn male child in every household.”

Lamarr considers the idea, before dismissing it. “Too #Jewish,” he says.

When I heard that quip in a recent rewatch with my girlfriend (her first time), I saw a new reason why you couldn’t make the #film today: Modern audiences, particularly those amateur critics itching to sound off online, seem to have more fluency in #bloodlibels about #Jews than the #Passover narrative #MelBrooks and Co. were riffing on. For those who think the #Epsteinfiles contain damning proof of elites eating babies, “too Jewish” might seem like an admission."

  2. #Movies #CultClassics

I just rewatched #BlazingSaddles (1974) for the first time in many years.

It is such an outrageous movie. One of the few you're hear the N-word spoken out loud but Cleavon Little (who died in 1992 at age 52) is the designated N-character well and he's supported by a cast of well known at the time comedic actors from the 70's, like Gene Wilder, Mel Brooks (of course), Harvey Gorman & Madeline Kline, who you'll also see in other Brooks made movies.

Talk about farce. There is no movie more farcical than this one, other than perhaps the #RockyHorrorPictureShow which are both cult classics IMO.

If you haven't ever seen it or haven't seen it for awhile, I suggest you take a look at it. It's currently available for streaming on #PrimeVideo.

  3. Spot on with Blazing Saddles, as I think was the film, although at that time I mainly saw it as very funny.

Can we expect to see a trans fart scene?

  4. Is #BlazingSaddles racist? Not at all – it shines a torch on a nation undergoing a serious identity crisis | #Film | The Guardian

One of my favourite films. When you realize that all the racist jokes about black people were written by the great #RichardPryor, you get a better idea of the context. #MelBrooks was courageous to make this film.

  5. Jim: Where you headed, cowboy?
    Bart: Nowhere special.
Jim: Nowhere special...I always wanted to go there.
    Bart: Come on, then.

Happy Blazing Saddles Day! One of my all-time favorite movies was released OTD in 1974.

  7. Here's another story, this time from NPR, on the making of "Blazing Saddles" and some initial reactions to its release — no slide shows this time!

  8. "Blazing Saddles," Mel Brooks' Western satire about a Black sheriff (Cleavon Little) appointed to save the town with drunken gunslinger, the Waco Kid (Gene Wilder), turned 50 this month. In this slide show, MovieMaker looks at how the film was made. “It was designed as an esoteric little picture. We wrote it for two weirdos in the balcony. For radicals, film nuts, guys who draw on the washroom wall — my kind of people,” Brooks told Playboy in 1975.

Thanks for posting that! I noticed that the book starts with lyrics from the film "Der Blaue Engel", part of which had been parodied by Mel Brooks' film "Blazing Saddles". It also reminded me that the lyrics in the latter film mirror that of the former.

  10. "That's Hedley!!!"

Apologies to anyone who hasn't seen Blazing Saddles and has no idea what I'm talking about... (Also had to explain who Hedy was and why the Wifi symbol was on the paper in her hand to younger chum).

  11. @Dustin Brecht was dead long before Blazing Saddles was made, but both Gene Wilder and Brooks' future wife, Anne Bancroft, had acted in the same production of Brecht's play "Mother Night", which also uses Epic Theater techniques. #bertoltbrecht #genewilder #annebancroft #mothernight #blazingsaddles
