Blarney Castle at sunset
I shot straight into the sun, so Blarney Castle came out as a flat black shape with nothing left but the outline. Two birds had claimed some of the highest points while all the humans had gone home for the day. It was a lovely evening. Perfect time for silhouettes....

Bumblebee on a cardoon
The cardoons in Blarney Castle Gardens have been left to flower, which is what you do if you want bees rather than dinner. This one was about the size of my fist, and the bumblebee had worked its way into the lower edge of it, half buried in the purple. I shot it zoomed in, so only a few centimetres of the florets is sharp and everything behind falls off to green. Some of the heads either side had already browned off and gone to seed, but the bees were busy feeding off the remaining ones. -

Blarney, from the secondary school and Woolen Mills to the Castle Digging through the archive I found these two aerial photos of Blarney from September 2016, and the first one stopped me. See those fields that border the houses on 3 sides? They're now Cluain Ard with houses, gardens, driveways, the lot. Back then it was still being farmed, with the older estates hugging the edges. The second frame is some of the village laid out like a model: the secondary school and its car park bottom […] -
We hit some landmarks (including St. Patrick's Cathedral, Guinness, Jameson, and Blarney Castle), but spent a lot of time wandering around, and enjoying all sorts of drinks and food. It was my first time in Ireland, and I loved it. I can't wait to go back!

Did you know that membership of Blarney Photography Club is now open to all (over 18s)? The new season starts in September and the club is holding an open night on September 5th at the local secondary school. Doors open at 7:30pm. I’ll be there, as will other members of the club. The famous Beginners and Improvers Photography Course will start the following week, and the 8-week course is great value at only €75. You’ll also become members of the club, and you’ll be welcome to our weekly meetings, outings, competitions, practical sessions and more!
