I recently learned that Slug Moth caterpillars fluoresce under UV. I've never done any UV photography but thought I would give it a try. I don't have a real stable set up and my shutter release remote needs a new battery, but this is what I ended up with. I find it interesting that the area around its head doesn't glow.

I made another neon doodle I have been wanting to make for awhile. A mini rasta doodle.
Blacklight is notoriously difficult (and expensive) but sorta fun when you get used to it. Of course Emerald, a usual nemesis of mine, was acting up. I shouldn't have left behind the imperfection from the emerald cracking the first time.
Long story short it isn't the kiln pumped 9 headed coil of black and colorful spikes that I wanted- but I did learn a few things. I want less green. Perhaps un-coated (transparent) emerald, or if I can find a larger diameter of emerald. I also want to use Saffron- the golden shade of yellow tubing instead of the easier to work with Sunflower. The saffron will make it more challenging, but a better warm white in the end. And bigger red sections.

I'm finally back from the desert and happy to get a chance to return to a somewhat more regular routine again. This plot was based on the sketch I made for the last round of Patreon cards I sent out before my trip. The blacklight reactive colours for this design are just too fun! The design itself was part of an exploration into Wave Function Collapse. :D

A year or two ago I grabbed a tangle I made at Galen's and sold it on this road trip adventure along the west coast. I finally got around to making him another to replace it while hanging out in Tacoma. I even got to help my buddy Jacob an Galen finish bending a neon job for a historic burger place in Tacoma.
This tangle has a big rainbow of colorful scrap and hard to get tubing. Some hand pulled sparkly aventurine, uranium and even Corning Oxblood ruby glass (the last two out of production since about the 1950's). Aventurine sparkly colors were never produced commercially- only custom hand pulled- thanks Jacob!
I think Galen plans on putting some wiggly krypton in there... After he sleeps.

A little video of the xenon and Blacklight tubes for Daniel Tepper. Forbidden Palestine Colors. The Blacklight crackle is a little brighter than I thought it would be. The xenon is neat. If you shake the tube the powders settle and the paths move when the glass adjusts. The powders brighten it.
These both look kinda dim next to the red and the green.
The xenon sure is fun to have!
