Can’t have #BlackHoleWeek without the black hole in Planet Unknown! I love how it turns the player board on its head. Instead of placing tiles to cover a planet, you play them to avoid the black hole. Now, I wouldn’t want to live that close to a black hole, but it’s a fun addition to this game.

For #BlackHoleWeek, I asked my spouse to play a bunch of games featuring black holes. First up? Twinkle, Twinkle, a tile-laying game of mapping the sky. Watch out, though. Black holes zap points from stars and planets. Satellites, though, don’t mind — it gives them a chance to take data!

🚨 New header picture 🖼️
Researchers from the independent @maxplanckgesellschaft research group “Binary Merger Observations and Numerical Relativity” have studied how the spins of merging black holes influence the recoil after their merger, and how this in turn influences the remnant spin magnitudes after repeated mergers in dense stellar environments.

In case you missed it during the most recent #blackHoleWeek, NASA put out a very nice visualization of flying around and of falling into a black hole, based on computations by @SchnittGetsReal. It can even be viewed as a 360 video if you have a #VR headset. They also have explainer versions for both on the same channel.

Had no idea there is a #BlackHoleWeek. And it just ended, which explains why there were so many Black Hole related posts this week. Including an interesting discovery that our Galactic Center is venting. Totally on point for astronomers to call it a Chimney Exhaust Vent 😂.
We need more such events. I propose a Liquid Methane Moons week when Dragonfly launches.

What's the smallest black hole we've detected? We're not sure!
The maximum neutron star mass is currently uncertain. We hope to measure it with future observations. We know it must be between 2 and 3 solar masses
The less massive objects of GW190814 (about 2.6 solar masses) and GW200210_092254 (about 2.8 solar masses) could be either massive neutron stars or small black holes

Could these black holes go on to merge again to form even bigger black holes? Maybe! This could happen if they are in a globular cluster or a nuclear star cluster where there are many black holes in a small region
It is possible that some of the binaries we have detected already were formed this way. As we observe more ,we'll be able to uncover the details of how our black holes form

When two black holes merge, they form a bigger black hole. This bigger black hole will have around 95% of the mass of its two parent black holes. The remaining 5% is carried away as the energy in the gravitational waves
