  13. #Florida students are giving up Saturdays to learn #BlackHistory lessons their schools don’t teach

    By KATE PAYNE
    Updated 12:15 AM EST, December 21, 2024

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — "Buried among Florida’s manicured golf courses and sprawling suburbs are the artifacts of its slave-holding past: the long-lost cemeteries of enslaved people, the statutes of #Confederate soldiers that still stand watch over town squares, the old #plantations turned into modern subdivisions that bear the same name. But many students aren’t learning that kind of Black history in Florida classrooms.

"In an old wooden bungalow in Delray Beach, Charlene Farrington and her staff gather groups of teenagers on Saturday mornings to teach them lessons she worries that public schools won’t provide. They talk about #SouthFlorida’s #Caribbean roots, the state’s dark history of #lynchings, how #segregation still shapes the landscape and how #grassroots #activists mobilized the #CivilRights Movement to upend generations of oppression.

    [...]

"When Sulaya Williams’ eldest child started school, she couldn’t find the comprehensive instruction she wanted for him in their area. So in 2016, she launched her own organization to teach Black history in community settings.

"'We wanted to make sure that our children knew our stories, to be able to pass down to their children,' Williams said.

"Williams now has a contract to teach Saturday school at a public #library in Fort Lauderdale, and her 12-year-old daughter Addah Gordon invites her classmates to join her.

"'It feels like I’m really learning my culture. Like I’m learning what my ancestors did,' Addah said. 'And most people don’t know what they did.'"

In the newest leg of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' crusade against "wokeness," the state's Board of Education on Wednesday approved new standards for its African American history curriculum that distort historical events and omit important context

In my 3rd #kentucky #blackhistory video of 2023, I talk about the Shelbyville Community Remembrance Project Coalition, formed in 2019 to memorialize the six Black men murdered by #lynching in the county (that we know of). Through the SCRPC, as of 2021, Shelbyville is the first town in Kentucky to officially memorialize lynching victims.

She responds that there were about 20 nice kids, 200 mean kids, and 1800 who said and did nothing but watched. On December 26, I move my #baseball replay of a fully #desegregated 1947 season from the Bird App to #mastodon

My promise to #BlackMastodon -- and everyone else -- is that I will never make a dime from this project.

I've been working on this for two years now and it's important to me. Eager to hear people's comments.

  27. From African & Black History on Twitter
    @[email protected]

On this day in 1969, activist and chairman of the Black Panther Party Fred Hampton, was assassinated by Chicago police and the FBI at just 21 years old.

William O'Neal, an FBI informant, infiltrated the Black Panthers and set up Fred Hampton for $300.

    A THREAD [ condensed from Twitter ]

In Illinois, where Fred Hampton was born, the police constantly harassed black people. Access to social goods too was made difficult, if not curtailed, in the areas with heavy black populations.

The party, a creation of Huey Newton and fellow student Bobby Seale, insisted on black nationalist response to racial discrimination. The party’s Illinois chapter was opened in 1967 and Hampton joined in 1968, aged just 20.

when Stokely Carmichael’s Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) split from the Panthers in 1969, Hampton headed the Illinois chapter of the Panthers.

Then a petty criminal, O’Neal was coerced by the FBI into helping them silence Hampton and the Black Panther Party. And he did just that when he infiltrated the party and provided the FBI with a floor plan of the Chicago apartment where Hampton was assassinated in 1969.
