  1. Some kind soul made this online SRD for the Black Sword Hack

  5. In a roll-under #TTRPG like The #BlackHack or #CairnRPG, is there some mechanism I've missed to adjust difficulty? Seems odd to have the same chance of success for everything you roll with a given attribute. #OSR #RPG

Played my first 'black hack' hack using Pulp! I am Lady Jaguar, a modern day (1935) jungle girl protecting her forest from poachers with her trusty companion Princess Snarl, an albino jaguar.

The system is extremely light on rules (which is the point!). The character sheets give just enough extra abilities to feel different.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the session so far but I'm leaning more towards the GM's ability rather than the system for me.

  7. Finally got around to setting up my first face to face #TTRPG campaign in a while.

Posted on Reddit for players, both in LFG and the local group, and am now waiting for responses.

I've even set up a quick paper.wf page as an introduction.
    paper.wf/pinellas-black-sword-

Might also set up a local Meetup account - not sure if it's worth the effort.

Any other ideas about how to attract players would be appreciated.

    You said
    "Then bust out #DCC #blackSwordHack #blackHack #OSE #whiteHack #intoTheOdd or some such thing."

This is called a "bait and switch".

Please do not assume ignorance in this conversation. You're allowed (encouraged!) to like different things but I'm also allowed to like different things. OK?

  9. I just ran a session of my weekly Black Hack game. One of my players was on trial for a crime.

There aren't any specific rules for that, so I decided to run the whole thing as a combat.

I treated Guilty and Not Guilty verdicts as monsters with hit points.

Players could come up with various tactics and ideas: Novel arguments, witnesses, evidence, etc. If the argument worked (they made their hit roll), it did damage to the Guilty verdict. Better tricks & arguments would do more damage.

The NPC prosecutor could do the same, attempting to do damage to the Not Guilty verdict.

The first side to reduce the other to zero HP would win.

We didn't actually get through the whole trial (Players blackmailed the DA to drop the charges), but the system seemed to work quite well.

The PC, incidentally, was actually guilty.

  10. Two #ttrpg games in two days (#BasicFantasy and #BlackHack in #UltravioletGrasslands). Great start to the week.

Had some theatre of the mind issues that I need think through though. I was describing a situation to my players and we just weren't agreeing on a shared theatre, basically.

  11. Just ran a #BlackHack one-shot in my Undergloom setting.

The plot was basically a Fistful of Dollars in a underground town, split between the Mole-Folk and the Underkin.

  12. My #Lumberlands #BlackHack campaign has been active for nearly a year. As we go along, I've been filling in a map of all of the major locations the players visited.

The original setting has no map, so I modified a old map of Maine.

It serves as a quick campaign log, and eventually as a nice memento for when the campaign ends.

  13. Just ran a one-shot of Black Sword Hack, just out of KS. I liked it quite a bit. All of the extra combat maneuvers, Spirit Alliances, and Demonic Pact rules give it a nice flavor. Definitely revisiting this one.

Since the game is heavily Moorcock inspired, I used a old Stormbringer adventure - "The Fang and the Fountain" from the Perils of the Young Kingdoms book. It's suitably grim, through I had to trim it a little to fit in a one-shot.

  14. I recently got the updated PDFs of the 2nd edition Black Sword Hack.

It's a lovely streamlined version of the #BlackHack designed to run Michael Moorcock-style fantasy.

I'm going to try it out this week, by running an old Stormbringer adventure as a one-shot.

Haven't decided on which one yet.

  15. Saw talks on usage die recently and no one shared the expected results so thought I'd post them.

Usage Die (Step down on 1 or 2)

    Starting Die | Expected Uses

    d20 | 30
    d12 | 20
    d10 | 14
    d8 | 9
    d6 | 5
    d4 | 2
  16. Because of this, when my players advance a level, they are very often left broke or in debt. Being in debt usually means they owe someone a favor, which usually leads into a side quest of some kind.

Because of this, I always keep a number of little mini-scenarios ready to go.

  17. I've been playing a game of the Black Hack RPG in the Lumberlands setting for about a year.

One of the quirks of the Black Hack is that to level up, you have to go to a tavern, buy a round of drinks, and tell stories. You have to roll D6s equivalent to your current level to determine how much gold you're spending.

  18. I shall now take a moment off to back 'A Home Reforged'; a dwarven-themed OSR zine, about reclaiming and rebuilding one's home, based on The Black Hack. kickstarter.com/projects/ahome

  20. I just backed the new edition of the Black Sword Hack:
    kickstarter.com/projects/89610

    Three reasons why:

    1. I loved the 1st edition - one of my favorite versions of the #BlackHack

    2. Made by the same people behind the Knock! #OSR books, so they've got a track record.

    3. They didn't include a bunch of complicated stretch goals, so it seems more likely to be completed.
