Closest I have ever been to a magpie. Went to give out one last snack of the day, which caused most to scatter. But, a couple stayed close by, including this one who stayed on the table until I got really close. 3 days in a row with magpie swarms, though, like yesterday, it was only until they ate everything. With temp basically out as a reason, I am now focused on the details of rotating foraging hypothesis. I suspect their main foraging for the day is somewhere else, with my yard simply being a snack. To my greatest of joys, the magpies have returned. Looking back at my tracking, I had set June 20 as the end of courting season, which is when most disappeared. There were stragglers for a few days after, plus what I can only call a “funeral” on the 21st, but that was it for nearly 20 days.
