On 25th March 1920 the first Black and Tans officially arrived in Ireland. They gained a reputation for brutality and became notorious for reprisal attacks on civilians and civilian property, including extrajudicial killings, arson and looting. Their actions further swayed Irish public opinion against British rule and drew condemnation in Britain.

On 14th December 1920 passenger services were suspended on the Cavan and Leitrim Railway due to the refusal of drivers and enginemen to carry the Black and Tans on trains at Mohill and Ballinamore. This led to the arrest and internment of railway employees.
