The processed recordings of the three #CompArch B0B35LSP lectures I presented have been updated/reprocessed. I have spent considerable time fixing the blur, which makes the #QtRvSim #RISCV simulation sequences especially less readable. There have been more problems, mainly in the professional #BlackMagic setup at our university. Even after some reports and related fixes, there seems to be at least one frame missing in every 4k recordings, so there is no match between the number of frames, recording time, and frame rate. This results in the detection of the file as a variable frame rate one by #kdenlive and even other tools (i.e. commercial on colleague’s MacOS). This results in transcoding to proper 25fps during import. There is an option to choose that as lossless, but when I already have 50GB from the original 1.5-hour recording, then I cannot imagine what the size would be. So there is degradation, and when the project is FullHD, and I want to expand one quarter of the original https://youtu.be/pqW9_1t5Y5U 4k video, which is holding my presentation monitor and projector output to the whole FullHD screen, then it leads to practical half resolution. Even though I have spent time with full 4k processing, then final scale down to FullHD loads to interpolation and blur, even for the nearest pixel select option. I have solved the problem by extracting the top-right quarter of the input using ffmpeg with high-quality encoding, then I have imported this new screen file, added it to the timeline after the already edited lecture, and then done precise manual replacement/switch of both audio and video chains in the “*.kdenlive” file to place this extracted screen to all already edited chunks in the correct playlist. I have then even replaced the converted 25 fps sources with the problematic original ones and re-run rendering, with confirmation of a VBR warning about possible skew between audio and video. Quite a lot of time was spent on incorrect output from a professional and probably very expensive setup. I have never had such problems with #opensource #obsstudio when using my old Intel HD graphics-based laptop (I have objected to signing the NVIDIA NDA at the university and do not want to use their HW if at least a little possible) to capture and process FullHD 50 Hz and sometimes even 4k 25 Hz videos from abandoned 4k #DataVideo camera with uncompressed stream over HDMI and USB CamLink. I would expect that if the expensive HW producers provide full resources on how to update, correct, enhance, and replace SW and firmware in their products to the community, then it would save a lot of time for everybody.

Months ago I was gifted a spare computer and I discovered it had a #Blackmagic intensity pro video capture card in it (cool) but I have had no luck getting it to work on my atomic (ba-boom) desktop (i'm just not technical enough to work that out). After returning to this issue (because banging my head against a wall often feels nice) I read that Blackmagic only really (aka easily) supports (wait for it) Arch based linux desktops (kill me now). #IntensityPro

The Charge and the Curriculum: How the Dark Arts Replaced Black Magic
Two phrases arrive from different centuries and now sit on the same shelf: “black magic” and “the Dark Arts.” Modern speakers treat them as synonyms. Older readers would have disagreed, and the disagreement matters, because the collapse of the two terms shows how our language for forbidden knowledge has migrated from the judicial to the aesthetic, from accusation to ambience.
“Black magic” is the older, harder word. In the historical record of Western occultism, it names magic understood as harmful, antisocial, or bound up with evil spirits. Britannica defines it as magic associated with the devil or evil spirits, and treatments of sorcery describe the practice as malevolent magic. Medieval nigromancy, corrupted in the vocabulary from necromancy, fused death magic, blackness, and illicit commerce with spirits into a single accusation. When a cleric in the fourteenth century charged someone with black magic, consequences followed: a trial, a tribunal, a sentence, often a burning. The word carried teeth because the world it belonged to took the accusation literally.
“The Dark Arts,” by contrast, does not appear in the premodern record as a settled technical category. The older learned tradition did use “the black arts” as a near synonym for black magic, and medieval and early modern writers divided forbidden practice by function rather than by atmosphere: sorcery, necromancy, goetia, maleficium, witchcraft, divination, theurgy. Each category carried its own definition and its own theological weight. A demonologist could distinguish between a witch’s pact and a scholar’s curious conjuration, and the distinction mattered, because lives depended on it. The phrase “Dark Arts” gathers all of that into one dramatic heap. It is a late label for a premodern field, and it sounds more like a book spine than a charge sheet.
The Christian demonological tradition narrows the question further. Aquinas treats divination as a species of superstition and condemns recourse to demons as rebellion against Providence. Within this framework, the operative concept is sin rather than glamour. Black magic names the moral-theological rebellion: the pursuit of harm, the reach for illicit power, the traffic with demonic agency. What a modern reader might call the Dark Arts would be, in Aquinas’s world, simply the whole condemned region of forbidden practice. The theologian did not need an atmospheric label. Fantasy literature reversed the polarity. In twentieth and twenty-first century writing, “Dark Arts” became the more precise term while “black magic” became the vague one. J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series offers the clearest example. The Dark Arts there name a corrupting discipline with its own curriculum, defenses, and lineage, practiced by institutions and taught in opposition by other institutions. The phrase implies doctrine. In the newer usage, “Dark Arts” reads as architectural while “black magic” reads as generic. A modern reader raised on fantasy often hears “Dark Arts” as the more serious term because it suggests a field of study, while “black magic” sounds like something shouted from a pulpit. Four hundred years ago, the hearing would have reversed. The pulpit word carried consequences. The field-of-study phrase did not yet exist in anything like its present meaning.

When the modern imagination treats “Dark Arts” and “black magic” as equivalent, it loses those distinctions. Everything forbidden becomes everything evil, and everything evil becomes everything forbidden. That is intellectually sloppy, and it produces a literature in which dangerous knowledge and murderous intent carry the same weight because the same adjective covers both. A fantasy novel can get away with the shorthand because the reader accepts moral collapse as a genre convention. A serious account of real-world occult history, or of real-world religious ethics, cannot.
There is also a political dimension worth naming. The older vocabulary belonged to a world that punished people for using it. Accusations of black magic produced trials, burnings, confiscations of property, and the destruction of families. The accusation operated as a weapon, and it was often aimed at women, the poor, the learned, the dissenting, or the foreign. When modern fantasy dresses the same vocabulary in robes and calls it a curriculum, it borrows the gravity of that older moral world without paying its cost. The reader feels the frisson of the forbidden without any sense that someone, somewhere, once died because a neighbor used the word in a deposition.
My own view is that the two terms should be kept apart when precision matters and allowed to drift together only when the context is frankly literary. Black magic is the sharper moral word: it names intent, names harm, names the condition of having turned one’s power against the order of things. The Dark Arts, as a phrase, is a later shelf, useful for novelists and game designers and screenwriters who need a single label for an entire shadow tradition. Treating the shelf as if it were the charge, or the charge as if it were only the shelf, flattens a vocabulary that once cut cleanly.
Both terms remain in use in their own domains. The real question is what happens to a culture when its language for forbidden knowledge migrates from the courtroom to the bookshelf. A society that once tried people for black magic now markets the Dark Arts to teenagers. The Day the (SFX) Circus Came
Lancashire-based live effects wizards BPM SFX recently brought the heat to campus. With an incendiary portfolio including work with Sleep Token, Sum 41, and Oasis, they filled Studio 001 with stage-tech toys of varying lethality.
The session gave (sensibly supervised) students a chance to play with professional kit that ran the gamut from innocuous confetti and bubble machines through to lasers, flamers, pyrotechnics, and sparklers – although it was the hand-held flamethrower that demanded the most interaction.
Loving the smell of accelerants in the afternoon, I rolled up to try my hand at conflagration and take some photos and video in the process. With only my phone camera to hand, I noted a lot of shots with the default app were over-exposed, supersaturated and unusable. Switching to the Blackmagic Camera app for greater control, I was able to adjust ISO and increase shutter speed to better capture the experience – and thankfully record in landscape despite holding the phone vertically. The end result being a short little video to commemorate the day, even if YouTube’s compression fails to preserve the HDR intricacy of the original laser spread.
The soundtrack forms an early work-in-progress teaser of future Trismegistus Hex material. A cheeky, if not outright blatant homage to horror movie maestro John Carpenter, but likely to change substantially in the final cut.
We don’t normally get access to such gear during the course of our studies, so it was great to get hands-on and, for some students, spark new career possibilities.

أطلقت Blackmagic تحديثاً جديداً لتطبيق Blackmagic Camera 3.3 لنظام iOS، يضيف ميزات مهمة للمحترفين. أبرزها دعم التحكم عن بعد عبر تطبيق Apple Watch جديد، مما يتيح للمستخدمين بدء التسجيل وضبط الإعدادات من معصمهم. كما يقدم التحديث دعماً لتثبيت ProRes RAW على iOS 26.1 والإخراج بوضع عمودي كامل عبر HDMI. تشمل التحسينات أيضاً دعم ملحقات Blackmagic Focus وZoom، والتحكم بكاميرا ATEM عند استخدام ProDock، وإصلاحات لمشاكل تسجيل ProRes RAW بالكاميرا الأمامية.
