Morrison's tangled examination of violence, misogyny, race purity, and myth-building is at once hyperlocal and expansively human, revealing at our hearts a terrifying mass of uncertainties.

  7. Yesterday I was talking about my longing for scifi books that don't take nation-states (or planet-states?) for granted as the default for political organization. Then, completely randomly (literally, by putting my library search results sorting on "random"), I started reading "Sweep of Stars" by Maurice Broaddus. I'm not sure what kind of political organization his characters are living under yet but it's definitely not the typical capitalist liberal quasi-democracy; it appears heavily influenced by West African cultural forms. The opening chapter is about a young person having her adult naming ceremony while wearing green/black/gold kente cloth and in the second chapter we meet an elderly griot who is also an ambassador to Old Earth (O.E. or "Oy!" as they sometimes call it). I'm delightfully surprised. What serendipity!

A call to action, a current and savvy microcosm of police violence and race, a tightly written story that risks not outlasting the problem it addresses.

As much call to action as fiction work, Thomas' book, a current and savvy microcosm of police violence and race, risks only not outlasting the problem it addresses.

  11. Wow, this is an incredible work by Crystal Wilkinson, PRAISESONG FOR THE KITCHEN GHOSTS. I know it's traversing ground that "High on the Hog" and a few other books have already traveled, but the focus is on the African American Appalachian community, and a deeper dive into personal family culture and stories. Intriguing, fabulous stuff. #CrystalWilkinson #PraisesongForKitchenGhosts #food #blackliterature #books

  13. A list of books by Black authors published in 2023. Very interested in the Michael Harriot (who should be in the Fediverse), and have been meaning to read the interview with bell hooks for a bit.

    #BoekPerWeek 60/52 ★★★☆☆

A love story, a sad one. Am not a fan of the genre myself, but I could appreciate this one. Hurston wrote in the vernacular of her characters, while the backdrop tells of how Black Americans, especially women, struggled to make a living in the 1930s.
