I can't help with Christchurch, but if you're in Dunedin, the Portsider restaurant in Port Chalmers serves bitterballen to die for. They also make a vegetarian version.
They're served with mustard on the side.

We made #dutch #bitterballen ! They turned out really really good, but it’s quite a process. Making the filling, letting it firm up in the fridge, then breading them and frying (oil, not ‘air’). Serve with mustard!

sitting in a pub, not much beats a plate of #bittergarnituur (deep-fried snacks such as #bitterballen, mini-loempias (springrolls), mozzarella sticks, #frikandellen and similar bite-size junkfood, served alongside young and aged cheese and preferably pickles), and a glass of cold Palm beer.
It's probably one of the things I miss the most moving to Norway.

I have a similar one when it comes to beer. I really want something to snack with it, preferably something salty or deep-fried. Probably comes from my student time when we'd have #Palm beers with #bitterballen and/or a cheese platter after classes (or occasionally in between 😌).
Unfortunately it's a more expensive habit here in #Norway compared to when I still lived in the #Netherlands, so it's one I had to beat, but the urge is still there. -

(I've yet to visit that place myself; haven't been to Oslo (apart from the airport) yet since I've heard of its existence. :))
