  1. 🐂#LostBones 🦥🐴🐘🐪 Near Little Sauk, Minnesota, a local naturalist began finding bison bones in the thick marl at the bottom of a river on his property. So, as one does, he started wading in neck-deep water—feeling for bones with his feet!

This is the fourth such Minnesota skeleton I’ve written about here. If you know of others, or have your own skeleton haunting a basement or garage this Halloween #FossilFriday, I’d love to hear the tale!

  5. #lostbones #FossilFriday 🐂🦥🐴🐪🐟🍃 In late summer 1988, a Granite Falls, MN couple excavating a refuse pit found a ~8000 year-old bison bone bed on their land. Finding a projectile point in the material led to three seasons of fieldwork, uncovering additional points, flakes, and tools, including a stone biface found in situ with the bison remains.

Some of these bones are now displayed at the Yellow Medicine County Historical Society.

  6. #LostBones #FossilFriday 🐂 Five bison species are said to have roamed North America: The Eurasian Bison priscus adapted into Bison latifrons, which downsized into Bison antiquus. Later, Bison occidentalis emerged in the Late Pleistocene, leading to today’s Bison bison. Are they all distinct, or was it a gradual shift?

  7. 🦌#Minnesota #FossilFriday 🐂🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟🍃Remnants of deer and bison are common along many Minnesota rivers. Teeth, metacarpals, metatarsals, and some long bones withstand the erosive forces of rivers particularly well.

These specimens were all found during a single kayak trip this field season, along just a two-mile stretch of river in southern Minnesota.

  8. It's #LostBones #FossilFriday!🐂🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟🍃 Bison hyoid bones are quite rare in the collections I have reviewed. This pair is part of a larger assemblage donated in 2022, including elements from both juvenile and adults.

The bones were all recovered in Wolcott Township by an independent researcher and are currently housed at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault Minnesota.

A remarkable find: Two neighbors contributed a total of 100 bison bones, discovered in separate years from the same lowland peat deposit spanning a highway in Walcott County, Minnesota. Notably, one of the collections shows possible signs of butchery.

Both collections are now at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault, Minnesota.

  12. 🐂#LostBones #FossilFriday 🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟🍃 In 1975, near Lake Koronis in central MN, a farmer uncovered a spring filled with bison bones while constructing a drainage ditch.

He contacted universities but found no interest. So, he and his family assembled a complete skeleton, which was displayed in a friend's leather shop for years before being acquired by the Paynesville Historical Society, where it resides today.

  13. 🐂#LostBones #FossilFriday🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟🍃 In 1983 while constructing a reservoir in Sherburne County Minnesota a farmer came across hundreds of jumbled bison bones.

in 1984, due to the nature of the site and the distribution of the bones, Dr. Stanley Lewis of St. Cloud State University concluded that the bison had possibly been washed in during a flood event.

  24. Happy #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🦬🐪🦣🦥🦫🍃 What is the most common Bison bison specimen found in river gravels besides teeth in Southern Minnesota? It's usually a metacarpal or a metatarsal.

These stout solid bones survive well within a river's fluvial processes. Here are a few example specimens.🦴
