#BirthTrauma inquiry launched by UK Parliament today. This is long overdue and something that a lot of mothers feel ashamed to talk about.
There is so much emphasis on the survival and health of a baby, that how they got here (in often hellish circumstances) is pushed out of the picture and it’s assumed new mothers move on.
What really happens is they have no time or energy to complain. If they do, questions are raised about their mental health.

Essential (and disturbing) read. #BirthTrauma is prominent in Canada as well, for the same reasons. Thank you to Dr. Ockenden -and Dr. Kirkup before her - for their work addressing poor maternal care in the UK. Planned vaginal birth is dangerous and comes with significant maternal/neonate morbidity & mortality. Failing to recognize that and provide appropriate care causes undue suffering.

Verbal abuse: “Na hora de fazer não chorou” (“You didn’t cry like that when making the baby”)
Physical Abuse: Withholding food and water, birthing while shackled
Sexual Abuse: Forced episiotomy (cutting of perineum), forced vaginal exams
Birth stats for midwives:
NVB: 66%
Forceps: 9.8%
Vacuum: 6.9%
Caesarean: 17.2%
Over 85% of midwives got the model of care that they wanted
45% had continuity of midwifery care.
75.4% got the care provider they wanted.
How do we achieve similar stats for the general population of birthing women?

Women who give birth with continuity of midwifery care are more likely to have an overall positive birth experience, regardless of what happens during the birth.
But continuity of midwifery care models are in high demand and get booked out VERY quickly.
So if you want to have continuity of midwifery care, you absolutely must book in as soon as possible.
Don't wait until your hospital booking-in appointment to make a decision about who you want as a care provider.
Look for a continuity of care midwife as soon as you know you are pregnant!
