"The truth behind the ‘Birds Aren’t Real’ conspiracy theory
We chart how a ‘fake movement with fake evidence and a fake history’ went viral
However, the most fascinating thing about this particular conspiracy theory is that it was never real, but a Gen Z satirical project hatched by Mr McIndoe, who finally admitted the ruse in 2021.
Speaking on a Ted Talk two years later, he said: 'I do not actually believe that birds are robots. This is a character that I played for four years. The leader of a fake movement with fake evidence and a fake history.
Our goal was to convince the public that our satirical movement was a real one, and see if the media would believe what we were saying.'Mr McIndoe described the scheme as 'a collective role-playing experiment' or a 'conspiracy within a conspiracy'.
Going undercover for four years was just part of the deception. The group forged hundreds of fake emails, apparently exposing elites and government officials in the drone surveillance plot and hired an actor to pretend to be an ex-CIA agent confessing to the crime.

The Birds Aren’t Real phenomenon attracted hundreds of thousands of supporters, most of whom were in on the gag, collectively laughing at the gullibility of modern online culture, but some genuinely believed there was something to it."

@kevin A friend nudged me to download the Finch app almost a year ago, and the number of positive habits I've been able to form because of the digital items I can get for my birb has been pretty great.
