Three audio spectrograms of a Bewick's wren recorded within a minute. The visual representation makes recognizing the bird easier than the sound, at least to me. Notice that the distinctive chirps come as a set of three, four, and five. The bird either can't count or it can count and changes this feature of it's call for reasons a mere mammal can't understand.

I used some parts I had lying around the house to build a #birdnetpi to identify some of the bark yard birds who tend to hide. It uses the BirdWeather network the #PUC units you may have seen for sale. The thing works pretty well!

Looking at the audio spectra really helps hear the #Birds songs and see how one differs from another.

  17. You probably can run BirdNET-Pi on a Pi Zero, but it will work a lot better on a Pi Model 4B.

  19. Fell at the first. I have a Pi Zero, not a Pi Zero W2. I wonder whether my local seller is actually a shop that I can walk into, rather than only an online distributor. It would be nice if they were, but I cannot even try until Monday.

  21. OK, let's do this.

Setting up a mobile BirdNET-Pi to eavesdrop on our feathered friends.

    Surveillance as it should be.

  23. Spent the last few days poking at the boundaries of my knowledge and (to my surprise) managed to set up a #PiHole for my home network. It's been chuggling along for about a week now, athough I had to learn a lot to even be able to debug the issues I faced, let alone "fix" them.

Got there in the end, though, and it feels great to learn new things.

I also pulled together a #BirdNETPi, a magical little box that listens for and identifies birds, for my parents. I wrote a script so that when it identifies a bird, it plays the saved recording through a smart speaker, but I might have to turn that off in the summertime!

  25. @norbert The inexpensive PQRQP GT16-1 wireless mic works very well. Not really permanent, gets about 3-4 hours of battery life but you get 2 mics and can swap (USB sound card handles this). I mention this model because more expensive ones did not work due to too much noise reduction that prevented BirdNET from working.

Still looking for better ones also but get a lot of detections with these. Sorry I don't speak German but hope this is useful.
