"But they were unaware that the great majority of the #biota, perhaps 99%, easily streamed through the holes of their nets; the holes were simply too big to capture these microbes. Even when membrane flters and microscopy were used, and they revealed great diversity of #microplankton and #nanoplankton, most #microbes evaded detection. The view of the pelagic web of life that emerged and became entrenched for a century was then based on a tiny fraction of marine biota."

“The kiwi, a… flightless bird from New Zealand, is disappearing, largely because of invasive species brought to the country’s islands by humans. So New Zealand has set a goal of exterminating rats, possums and other invasive animals that threaten the country’s biodiversity…”

  7. What should happen to native forests when logging ends? Ask Victoria’s First Peoples

"Conservationists are celebrating a win sought for decades. The damage done by logging on biodiversity has been significant, with once common species now endangered and mature forests now fragmented and dotted with young fire-prone regrowth."
"Colonisation affected Country differently across Australia. But many effects are similar across the continent. European-style land management coincides with species extinctions across the continent. "

Reading the black book: The number, timing, distribution and causes of listed extinctions in Australia

"We conclude that 100 Australian endemic species are validly recognised as extinct since 1788: a rate of loss of about 4.3 species per decade since European colonisation of the continent. This rate is not diminishing and we interpret this more-or-less constant but continuing rate of loss .."

"Here, we review the record of extinctions. We ask the following: (1) how many extinctions have occurred; (2) whether particular taxonomic groupings have been most affected; (3) when did they occur; (4) where did they occur; and (5) what factors caused or contributed to them?"

  9. In honor of #CuneiformRecords reissuing the #Heretic catalog, here's our #review from 1996 of Past in Future. " In general the music straddles the line between #ElectronicRock and #AmbientMusic, hovering somewhere between the random soundscapes of #Biota, the aggressive imagery of #RichardPinhas, and the ambient driftiness of #ForrestFang's Migration, but in fact is like none of these." #ExposeOnline #tbt expose.org/index.php/articles/

  11. #FossilAdventCalendar Day 4

The oddest and - at over 560 million years in age - oldest #fossil featured in this #AdventCalendar is Fractofusus misrai from #Newfoundland 🇨🇦. This specimen in the #RoyalOntarioMuseum is from #MistakenPoint, one of the sites preserving the #Ediacaran #biota, the term for some of our planet's oldest #multicellular #fossils. Lots of questions remain about these ancient enigmas, among them, were #Ediacarans #animals or members of a different branch of the tree of life?
