Mission managers have established command communications with all four of NASA’s #Starling CubeSats - Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde are part of an ambitious test to develop self-coordinating robotic swarms: https://blogs.nasa.gov/smallsatellites/2023/08/09/communications-achieved-for-nasas-four-starling-cubesats.
Also NASA has decided to extend #BioSentinel’s mission by up to an additional 18 months, or as late as November 2024, to continue collecting valuable deep space #radiation data in a unique, high-radiation environment beyond low Earth orbit: https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/ames/nasa-extends-biosentinels-mission-to-measure-deep-space-radiation

@badassassin
I am curious how the comm. system (frequency bands, antenna, power, SNR, data rates) compare between the BioSentinel CubeSat and LEO systems you worked on.
There is some comm system info on #BioSentinel at https://fosstodon.org/@AkaSci/109494841903260749 -

The BioSentinel astrobiology mission uses yeast to study radiation related DNA damage and repair in deep space; similar studies have so far been done in low earth orbit (LEO).
The study uses microfluidic cards to grow 2 strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As shown in the graphic below, each card has 16 wells - 8 contain the wild type strain, and 8 contain a radiation-sensitized strain rad51Δ.

The BioSentinel spacecraft, containing live yeast cells, is now 3.3 million km from earth, in an earth-trailing heliocentric orbit, as shown in the graphic below.
The BioSentinel experiment was launched with Artemis I on Nov 16, 2022. The first batch of yeast cells were activated around Dec 5.
The astrobiology mission is using yeast to study radiation related DNA damage and repair in deep space, far beyond low earth orbit (LEO).

The BioSentinel CubeSat mission is doing well.
It is in an earth-trailing heliocentric orbit, currently just outside earth's orbit.
Yeast cells are currently getting warmed up and rehydrated for the first long duration biology/DNA experiment in deep space.

How will Deep Space radiation affect eukaryotic life? We will know soon, only for S. cerevisiae yeast, but its a start. #BioSentinel #CubeSat https://www.researchgate.net/figure/The-BioSentinel-biological-CubeSat-and-its-subsystems-Budding-yeast-cells-are-first_fig1_340615674

@HermannMucke
Here is a summary of the status of the 10 CubeSats deployed by #Artemis.AFAIK, only 3 of the CubeSats are known to be operational after the lunar flyby on Nov 21. Luckily, one of them is #BioSentinel.

Only 4 of the 10 CubeSats released by the Artemis I mission have been confirmed operational: https://www.universetoday.com/158787/what-happened-to-those-cubesats-that-were-launched-with-artemis-i/. Luckily (as life scientists will see it) one of these is #BioSentinel, the one meant to study the effect of deep space radiation on yeast. Also luckily, the Japanese EQUULEUS which studies the radiation field as such, is also functional - we might be able to correlate the data.

Good news on the BioSentinel CubeSat - looks like it made a successful lunar flyby!
BioSentinel is an astrobiology mission, by NASA Ames, which will use yeast to study the effects of radiation on DNA in deep space.

The BioSentinel spacecraft was one of 10 CubeSats deployed by Artemis yesterday. The astrobiology mission will use yeast to study radiation related DNA damage and repair in deep space, far beyond low earth orbit (LEO).
The study, led by NASA Ames, will use two strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which will be activated at different times during the 6-12 month mission, in a solar orbit similar to that of earth.
