The EU's #AIAct experts consultation on the definition of an AI system and on prohibited AI practices closed on Dec 11. But loopholes still threaten #FundamentalRights.

The #AIActCivilSociety and the #ProtectNotSurveil coalitions demand guidelines that ban #SocialScoring, #BiometricSurveillance, and other harmful practices. We call on the AI Office to ensure the upcoming guidelines will provide a fundamental rights-based enforcement of the AI Act.

Brief look back:

• The EU parliament voted for a ban on #biometricSurveillance. The resulting law is not all that great

• #Chatcontrol remains blocked not least because of amazing work done on the national level. We did change some minds.

Outlook:

• We have to fight tooth and nail to defend #GDPR and #DSA. The latter is under attack by right-wing extremists.

• We need to defend social rights.

• Right-wing extremists form the third-largest faction of the EP. The cordon sanitaire has crumbled.

• #FortressEurope, electronic #borderControl

• human rights defenders are at risk

• #lawfulAccess is a phantasy of some law enforcement agencies who want to do away with #encryption. Experts agree that weakening or circumventing encryption would damage IT security beyond repair.

• Keep an eye on the #DigitalFairnessAct that is coming up.

We might not have a progressive majority any more in the European Parliament. But we can still change minds. We have freedom not fear.
