📄 "The (Un)suitability of Passwords and Password Managers in Virtual Reality" by Emiram Kablo, Yorick Last, Patricia Arias Cabarcos, and Melanie Volkamer was accepted for presentation at the #Conference on Sociotechnical #Cybersecurity and #Privacy (SCP 2026). The paper examines the experiences, preferences, and expectations of 126 #VR users regarding #authentication in virtual reality through a user study.
👓 The study revealed a clear preference for simple passwords, as well as interest in #biometric methods and #password managers. It then conducts the first comprehensive evaluation of existing password managers in VR based on 91 cognitive walkthroughs and expert reviews. The results show that while password managers improve #usability, important features such as cross-app #autofill are still missing. Building on this, the paper formulates recommendations for more #secure and user-friendly VR authentication.

Here's a question for our internet savvy communities. I just encountered a subscription based newsletter that required my email address. It also asked for me to press and hold my fingerprint on a tab to "prove I was not a bot". Can this type of software feature on a website record my fingerprint and make it available to others? Just days after a damning WIRED report exposed that Meta had quietly embedded facial recognition technology (#FRT ) code into millions of phones, the tech giant has quietly acquiesced in demands to reverse course.
Last week, researchers identified code in #MetaAI , a companion app for its line of smart glasses, that could convert images of faces into unique #biometric signatures to #identify strangers in public. EFF’s Threat Lab verified these findings through static analysis, and reminded consumers to think twice before buying or using Meta’s #surveillance glasses.

People often take us for "extremists" when we tell them we don't use #Zoom and other surveillance systems masquerading as commercial products. They should rather call us insightful.
Why? Yet another example: when you go to a Zoom meeting, you give them #biometric information. Of course they will tell you it's to protect you from #AI and #deepfakes

March 5 2026, 5:53 a.m."Former Minnesota state Sen. #MattLittle was lawfully observing federal immigration agents in a Dakota County neighborhood last month when the drive took an unexpected turn.
"As he followed their vehicles, they led him down a rural road that grew increasingly familiar during the 20-minute drive. Soon, Little told #TheIntercept, he realized where the federal agents were headed: his house.
"When he approached his driveway, two SUVs were already waiting, Little said. Agents moved to block his car, claiming he had impeded their investigation and that local law enforcement would be called. No other officers came to his house, and Little was not cited or charged.
" 'The intent was clearly to intimidate us. It’s stressful. It’s a little bit scary. But at the same time,' Little said, 'I just think it’s really important to be out there and monitoring what they’re doing.'
"Interviews, sworn declarations, and video reviewed by The Intercept indicate that Little is not the only person subjected to this kind of #intimidation. Across the #TwinCities, immigration agents have identified legal observers by name and address, and, in some cases, led them back to their homes after they engaged in lawful monitoring of immigration activity. Legal observers say this pattern of behavior sends a clear and chilling message: The federal government knows who they are and where they live.
"These encounters are unfolding amid a rapid expansion of federal #surveillance capabilities.
"Immigration authorities have significantly expanded their use of mobile #biometric and surveillance tools in recent years. Officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as Customs and Border Protection, for example, can use the smartphone app #MobileFortify to photograph a person’s face or capture fingerprints in the field and compare them against federal biometric databases, according to a Department of Homeland Security inventory of artificial intelligence technologies."
