  1. Burning forest “waste” to generate energy?

"Burning forest ‘waste’ to make cement damages the climate. Let’s pursue cleaner options."

"...Burning forest biomass, or so-called forest “waste” – which could include dead trees, understorey vegetation and fallen logs – generates large amounts of carbon emissions. It will likely also accelerate poor forest health. Burning forest biomass to make concrete is poor climate policy, poor environmental and forest policy, and a poor use of taxpayer funds."

"However, Australian governments must stop using taxpayer money to subsidise projects that entail large-scale burning of forest and woodland biomass for industrial energy." >>

  3. It has been very dry in #Argentina in the last few years increasing the aridity in the region and stressing agricultural fields.

Increased #Dust and #fire activity are a consequence of this continuous drought as shown in this animation of 20 days of satellite obs over lake Mar Chiquita the most active and voluminous source in the area.

Note the activity occurs with wind from practically any direction and both dust and smoke emission can occur simultaneously.

  5. Yesterday in Bolivia, strong north winds (part of a phenomenon referred as low level jet) triggered #dust blowouts from dry river beds (sandbars are usually exposed at the end of the winter because minimal melting upstream) and fan fires creating long #smoke plumes.

  13. Fires in S. America generate thick smoke & it is trapped against the Andes mountains.

If it was August-Sep, winds would displace smoke southbound creating the so-called river of smoke. However, forecast indicates that smoke will not move much & should keep piling up against mountains.

  15. Hello everyone! I am an environmental engineer at the University of Michigan. I study air quality (outdoor and indoor) and especially aerosol particles and deposited films (indoor grime).

I’m looking forward to updates on papers and talks as well as general conversations about #aerosols #airquaility #biomassburning #wildfires

    #Introduction #TwitterMigration

I will also occasionally share photos of Lulu (#cat)
