HOBIT is a fully integrated, wireless implantable device that houses engineered, drug-producing cells and sustains them by actively generating local oxygen. It solves the critical challenge of keeping dense clusters of therapeutic cells alive in poorly oxygenated areas of the body, such as under the skin.

Using a microfluidic flow cell from GeSiM, researchers at the JLB investigated the separation of the lipid-producing #microalgae C.cohnii using #dielectrophoresis (DEP). The application of alternating current causes the cells to be deflected by the DEP force acting on them. The researchers succeeded in separating viable cells according to size and electrical properties, which correlate with the lipid content - as GeSiM now reports:

The #IMEC recently presented an extremely small wireless power supply unit that works with ultrasound. It makes it possible to charge neural and other #implants with low power consumption. Since conventional power supply methods pose a risk to patients, the IMEC developed an #ultrasound technology whose radiation can penetrate the skull. The new technology can charge implants wirelessly.

The #ELECTRONICS GOES GREEN conference is taking place in Berlin in June. We will be there with a poster on the technically and socially appropriate handling of personal data from #wearables, which will be presented by Martin Kögler, Jef Hooyberghs and Mario Birkholz.
They will report on concepts for secure data storage and processing in order to protect the #privacy of users.

Poor sitting posture can lead to spinal disorders. So-called deformation #bioelectronics are available for #prevention, but they are usually stiff and not very elastic. A new method uses a mounting #strategy with deformable and highly sensitive #sensors and a domain-sensing #network that monitors the spine and issues early warnings in the #event of an unhealthy posture (it is best not to let it get that far and to #exercise regularly 🙂).
-
Self-charging #batteries are needed to use #wearables in animal studies. Solar-powered batteries or those that recharge through exercise are not a viable solution. A #GPS tracker whose Li-ion capacitor can be charged by simple movements was presented in PLoS One. However, the systems must be accepted by a 700 kg bison as shown in the picture - otherwise they are quickly destroyed.

A change of scenery now and then leads to new synaptic connections and changes in the #brain - even in mice. A group of researchers implanted #biosensor arrays with 4096 electrodes into the brains of #mice and kept one of two groups in a well-appointed dwelling. Certain behaviors, such as changing rooms, were rewarded. Subsequent brain analyses showed the positive effects of changing environments, e.g., on #neuronal dynamics.
