This seminal work introduced a critique of neoclassical economics that was the first of its kind and of an entirely non-marxist origin, asserting that infinite growth economies contradict the laws of thermodynamics. It was a conclusive blow to the prevailing economic theories of the era and helped initiate new economic fields today known as ecological economics and biophysical economics which put energy, resource flows, and ecological balance at the center of study.
