💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🐟👂 Researchers at #Florida Atlantic University trained an #AI model to identify what marine #predators eat by analyzing the sounds of #shells being crushed.
The tool, tested on whitespotted eagle #rays, can distinguish between #prey like #clams and #snails based on chewing #audio and processing time. The team plans to expand the model to other shell crushing #predators such as #crabs.

Got to spend the last 24 hours with my former PhD advisor, Dr. Joy O'Keefe, and her husband while they were in New York.
I took us out to a little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) colony at our other field campus across the lake and we recorded some bats at sunset. Then navigated back across the lake in the fog watching lots of bats forage across the water.

Across an extraordinary variety of species, animals vocalize at a strikingly consistent rate of approximately two to three acoustic events per second (around 2.8 Hz), constrained by the brain's inherent capacity to process auditory stimuli.

Finally finished some light engineering for a bioacoustic monitoring job this summer, within the context of an agro-ecology grant. Test rig is currently running in the garden with the others in storage. Still missing some odd bits (U-bolts seem hard to source).

And second the Tree Pipit song.
Both recordings where made with a Telinga Modular but this time I switched to the FEL Clippy mics. So far I like them but haven't had much opportunity yesterday to record. Will have to follow up on this. Field recording intensifies 🎤

So here is the recording from yesterday of the female Black Grouse singing (or is courtship call more appropriate?)
Wasn't aware of this behaviour/ sound before. Realy love it.
Only editing applied is a shelving EQ below 130 Hz.#fieldrecording #nature #sound #BioAcoustics #BirdSong #BirdsOfMastodon

Been looking and listening for the Black Grouse again. This time with success.
Saw and recorded both male and female.
Due to a lack of a proper camera here is a shot taken through my bins of the female bird perched in a tree.
Also a lovely work desk. Next home office setup 😉#birding #birdcount #birdsofmastodon #fieldrecording #nature #BioAcoustics #fieldwork

Costa Rica: The Sound of a Successful Rainforest Recovery Program
🪙 The first nation-wide program that paid landowners to leave pastureland untouched has been successful.
🎤 Drawing on the burgeoning field of #BioAcoustics researchers revealed how the din of life in forests regrowing under the program had a lot in common with intact forests in the area.
💬 “Empowering local people and sharing nature’s bounty among all, instead of locking it away for the privileged few, is a radically effective ecological solution.”
