Did you know Toronto's Billy Bishop airport is owned by US company JP Morgan? They bought it in 2015. Other highlights from a newsletter from a provincial rep Peter Tabuns:
After JP Morgan bought it "The investment returns soured, so they hired lobbyists and got the Ontario government to buy into the plan to expand the airport."

"The Ford government needs to repeal Bill 110. This was the legislation that authorized the province to take ownership of the #Toronto Islands and Little Norway Park. Bill 110 empowers the provincial government to sell or develop the property."

"The #Ontario and federal governments also need to repeal Bill 5 and Bill C-5. Ford threatened to use the Billy Bishop expansion as a test case for Bill 5, which creates “Special Economic Zones” and gives the province sweeping powers to override municipal bylaws, environmental rules, and provincial legislation to fast-track projects."

"The Federal government must take responsibility and rein in its federal public agency, the Toronto Port Authority (TPA), that operates the Billy Bishop Island Airport. The TPA was one of the main proponents of the runway expansion, and it recklessly encouraged Ford to take over the City’s ownership of Toronto Islands, Little Norway Park, and its interest in the tripartite agreement.
The federal Minister of Transport nominates seven out of the nine-member Board of Directors. Currently, five of these positions are vacant,..."

So I'm walking along thinking about Mark Carney's govt having decided they couldn't afford to lose Toronto votes, and so halted the #BillyBishop airport expansion.

But it doesn't wipe out all the scrapping of environment protections, the big investments in AI and pipelines, etc.

And I look up, and what do I see? A giant "fuck Carney" painted on a rock. #Acab on the other side. Yeah.

For #Toronto residents only the #NDP has a unified federal & provincial position opposing Doug Ford's plans to pave the waterfront for jets at #BillyBishop Airport.

There is a provincial by-election in #Scarborough Southwest coming up. Voters in that riding can choose ONDP candidate Fatima Shaban.

I think the Carney Liberals have just written off 23 Liberal seats in Toronto to the #NDP. Aside from a few weasel words here and there, none have expressed opposition to Doug Ford paving the Toronto waterfront for jets at Billy Bishop Airport.

The NDP at both provincial and federal levels has been crystal clear about their opposition to this.
