I really enjoyed #Fables until #BillWillingham decided to make the “rabidly pro-Israel” (his words) subtext the actual text, so I’m a bit conflicted about Bill and his work.
Nonetheless, this is an interesting development in the relationship between creators and those mega-corporations which only exist to appropriate and artlessly exploit the creations of others. See also #AlanMoore instructing #DC to give all his film royalties to #BlackLivesMatter

As for Bill Willingham’s Public Domain rationale beyond DC’s repulsive sewer show, I’m fully on board with that.
I’ve always been a copyright minimalist; I’ve always tried to be as generous as I can—short of starving—with CC licensing; and copyright has long since become the cudgel of corporate lawyers and psychotic “estates” against readers & writers anyway.
20 years sounds good to me. Count me in.

"during the contract negotiations for the new issues, their legal negotiators tried to make it a condition of the deal that the work be done as work for hire, effectively throwing the property irrevocably into the hands of DC. When that didn’t work their excuse was, “Sorry, we didn’t read your contract going into these negotiations. We thought we owned it.”

After 20 yrs, #BillWillingham releases #Fables into the #PublicDomain. *HE* is still under contract with #DCComics for future work / #royalties / project approval, but the public is not, not bound by #trademarks or #copyright, & free to do as they like with it in #FanFic & other forms of #art.
He's had disputes with DC Comics forever w/o much relief & this is one of his ways to fight back.

“Mark Buckingham is free to do his version of Fables (and I dearly hope he does). Steve Leialoha is free to do his version of Fables (which I’d love to see). And so on. You don’t have to get my permission (but you might get my blessing, depending on your plans). You don’t have to get DC’s permission, or the permission of anyone else. You never signed the same agreements I did with DC Comics”.
I’d love to see both. Hope they take that up.

It is important to remember that many of DC Vertigo’s original lineup of comics *were* creator-owned (Preacher, Fables, Y: The Last Man) and while the leadership (and ownership) of the imprint has changed a lot since then those agreements absolutely should be honoured.
If they aren’t then (as Willingham points out) legal action is both costly and time consuming. Time at 67 he doesn’t feel he has to spare. Fair play to him.

One thing in particular I learned from this: It doesn’t sound like Willingham was told about DC licensing Fables to Telltale Games for The Wolf Among Us. While that game may have received positive responses, with Fables being creator owned there is no way that should have been allowed to happen.
