Oh, definitely a lot of unidirectional pollination from XEROX PARC to the Lisa and Mac teams 😄

(Although it's not the cheap rip-off that some people claim. #BillAtkinson did a heck of a lot of ingenious work to make a GUI useable at 5Mhz.)

Yes, the Mac didn't get arrow keys until the Mac Plus in 1986, in this horrid arrangement:

    ⬜⬜⬆️
    ⬅️➡️⬇️

You were expected to click where you wanted the insertion caret to go! XD

The Macintosh SE and II in 1987 brought the Control key, only used for DOS emulation. The option key was mapped to alt for (emulation) software that needed it.

With Mac OS X, they started using the Control key in addition to Command, Option, and Shift for keyboard shortcuts, a very bad idea.

#BillAtkinson didn't work so hard to figure out how to draw rounded rectangles for them to be abused like this.

    How gauche. :P

  8. The blank canvas of MacPaint, the moment you open it, still feels like pure magic to me. People keep creating incredible things with it—but just a second before any of that exists, there’s only that quiet, perfect white space. Surrounded by just the tools you’ll need—nothing less, nothing more.

#AtkinsonDithering looks really nice, and it's just a tweak on the classic #FloydSteinberg dithering.

RIP #BillAtkinson, the dude did so much for us, and most people don't know who he was. :/

    Color cycling FTW. Lost art!!!

Also, it's a much closer analogy to the moving beer signs that inspired #BillAtkinson to create the "marching ants" effect in #MacPaint.

  15. @lefebvre My first PC. I learned to program data strings into displaying graphics using BASIC commands, plotting my ideas out on graph paper first.

Then in 1984 saw a Mac running MacPaint. Everything changed after that.

  16. Computer engineer and Apple veteran William "Bill" Atkinson has died of pancreatic cancer at age 74. Atkinson created the QuickDraw graphics engine, which made the Macintosh interface possible and, says @arstechnica's @benjedwards, "transformed abstract computer science into intuitive visual experiences that millions would use daily."

"I say this with no hyperbole: Bill Atkinson may well have been the best computer programmer who ever lived," wrote veteran Apple analyst @gruber on his Daring Fireball blog. "Without question, he's on the short list. What a man, what a mind, what gifts to the world he left us." Here's Edwards' story; find Gruber's full tribute at the second link.

  22. Thanks to Bill Atkinson and QuickDraw, I got excited about writing software that created graphic output and was easy to use. And thanks to the Mac, I would soon leave architecture behind and start a new career.

  23. In honor of Bill Atkinson, I’ve been reading the QuickDraw source code released by CHM and writing a little C implementation of his Region structure, which was an incredibly elegant solution to a problem so many people working on window systems never even realized they had. RIP Bill. #retrocomputing #BillAtkinson #QuickDraw

  24. #BillAtkinson died. I worked with him at General Magic for a while and communicated with him infrequently over the years since. He was a brilliant, influential, complicated, and ultimately good man. I would consider him a friend, if under interacted with. I will miss him. I think he is worth missing by me, by others, by the industry, and by the world. I am thinking of him and his family.

  25. Nice look back at the legacy of Bill Atkinson from Steven Levy.

  27. I’m not a fan of self-boosting, but I realised I was remiss in not putting some hashtags on this post after it started gaining the small amount of traction it has.

For those who boosted or liked the original, I’m not asking or expecting a repeat. I just hope with these hashtags it gets a little more traction to acknowledge the genius of #BillAtkinson, who affected so many lives through the genius work he did.

I know he impacted many aspects of my life through the work he did on the Mac, the original System, and MacPaint, and it seems many others were similarly impacted.

It’s been truly inspiring for me to see Mac legends talk how he put the lie to the saying “Never meet your heroes”, as he seemed to have been a hero to many, and never a disappointment in person.

    RIP, Bill. :alogo6:

  33. RIP #BillAtkinson (1951–2025). During his time at #Apple, he was central to the development of the graphical user interface of the Lisa and later the Macintosh, and is best known for creating MacPaint, QuickDraw, and HyperCard.

Atkinson is also credited for designing Venice, a chancery script bitmap font. Along with #SusanKare’s designs, it was one the “City” fonts that came with the original #Macintosh. fontsinuse.com/type_designers/

  34. Sad to read that Bill Atkinson has passed away. I was a Commodore kid in those early years of the digital revolution, but my all-time favorite pixel editor, the Amiga's Deluxe Paint ("DPaint"), was inspired by Bill's MacPaint.

If you'd like to (re)try DPaint, there's a great resurrection of it in the shape of @PyDPainter

  36. OMG I've never seen this video containing a panel by the team behind the original Macintosh together with Steve Jobs.

Bill Atkinson RIP gives a demo of MacPaint around 29 minutes in. Remember kids this at first was painting software on a greyscale display, not colour.
