Bloody hell this is maddening. The province builds bike lane segments in front of every new LRT station, expecting the city to build the rest.
Now the city is saying it won’t do that, because the province doesn’t like bike lanes anymore?#Bill212
So now cars don’t have their lane AND cyclists are unsafe. Great job everyone.

WE WON.
Justice Schabas found that Ontario's law, Bill 212, violated section 7 of our charter rights.
The court was impatient with the Ontario government having no evidence to back up its claims.
The bike lanes on Bloor Street, University Avenue, and Yonge Street are now *protected* (get it?) from Doug Ford attempt to remove them.

Getting ready for today's rally? Consider adding an extra layer to your gear, we often ride slower which doesn't generate as much heat. Thick socks especially are a good idea.
If you have an insulated water bottle, you can use that to bring some hot water to help you stay warm.

I'm looking forward to another protest ride to keep our bike lanes! This one with Friday's For Future, we're going to ride from High Park to the MPP's office on Norseman St.
Tonight at work I saw 3 lanes of the 401 express closed in both directions, plus both directions closed on Markham Rd.
Doug Ford is trying to distract from it, but the congestion is the construction folks!

Nice to know our city Councillor Paula Fletcher is fighting the province on it's plan to remove bike lanes. Sadly, #Bill212 passed. This is excerpted from our Councillor's newsletter. Keep up the feedback to Ford's office, try to get people from out of the city involved too as removing bike lanes could affect other parts of Ontario too:
"...The province claims Bill 212 will address congestion. I suggest the Premier instead focus on finishing long-delayed provincial projects like the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRT if he's serious about tackling gridlock. There is no serious evidence-based study that links bike lanes to congestion. The proper regulation of Private Transportation Company (PTC) licences (i.e. Uber) is a more immediate way to address congestion.
With over 50,000 active licenses and a peak of 199,000 daily trips, Uber and other PTC vehicles are a significant source of congestion in downtown neighbourhoods, making up almost 14% of daily traffic. What's more, most of their time is spent without passengers rather than transporting commuters.
...Transportation experts have also warned of the serious risks of removing these bike lanes. This includes increased collisions, environmental setbacks, impacts to local businesses and over $75 million in costs..."

Doug Ford has passed Bill 212, but for me that's just the start of the fight. Honestly these large group protest rides have been some of the most fun I've had in years.
Next event is #CriticalMass Friday, November 29 @ 6pm. Departing from High Park.

#Bill212 in Ontario passed yesterday in the #Ontario legislature. This further entrenches our car-dependent lifestyle, exempts multiple billion-dollar highway projects from environmental assessments that could halt it, continues to leave #Indigenous perspectives out of meaningful decision-making capacities, and will result in the death of pedestrians and cyclists as bike lanes are removed or stalled across the province

"Map showing the eight corporate developers who own massive properties along the proposed route of the new Highway 413"
Along with ripping out bike lanes to pander to his ignorant base in a cynical vote getting ploy, Bill 212 - just passed - hands over piles of farmland to Doug Ford's developer mafia cronies and shrugs off environmental assessments and an Indigenous consultation in progress.

Ford government to ban lawsuits against province if cyclists are hurt or killed on streets where bike lanes were removed
Absolutely unhinged

@tezoatlipoca Ford is an authoritarian. His own government report says removing bike lanes will make car traffic worse but he's still forcing it through and stoking his manufactured culture war of "bikes vs cars".
Others who oppose #Bill212 include: UofT, Ontario Traffic Council, Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, CEOs of Mount Sinai and Sick Kids hospitals, 120 ER room doctors, Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the Bloor Street BIA, etc, etc.

Today, #DougFord's conservatives proposed amendments to #Bill212, making it even worse. These are the details from Jessica Bell on the bird site:
"The Conservatives has dropped a new 11 page amendment to Bill 212.
We'll be debating the amendment in committee this afternoon, and we're reviewing it now."

Ontario Society of Professional Engineers opposes #Bill212
"Rather than reverting to outdated, car-centric policies, we must invest in a diverse range of public transportation options, including cycling infrastructure, to make our roads safer and our cities more sustainable. We owe it to our communities to develop solutions that will support our growing population, reduce emissions, and ensure that all road users can navigate the streets safely and efficiently."

This is fine! This is not nefarious at all! I am definitely not thinking that there is a very good chance a new monster highway in the Greenbelt would not pass an environmental assessment!
