Música: Playlist – Vivo, en el corazón de la ciudad

Como los álbumes conceptuales -carajo, como los álbumes mismos-, la idea de disco en vivo es muy siglo XX. También son muy del siglo XX los géneros musicales que más propiciaron la aparición de registros fonográficos de conciertos: el jazz y el rock, y de ahí pueden abrirse dos puntas para entender funcionalidades y propósitos del disco en vivo. Por el lado del jazz viene la apertura de improvisación que puede favorecer el marco del show, y pegada, cierta espontaneidad -e intensidad, soltura- también favorecidas por el marco del vivo. Por el lado del rock, su conjunto hace intersección con esta idea de espontaneidad (aun más enfatizada que en el mundo del jazz, dado que en el rock n roll no se suele exigir un standard interpretativo de excelencia y se perdonan con más indulgencia los posibles yerros), la actitud (“salir a matar”) y otro motivo ya del lado de la industria: su posible presentación y uso como “grandes éxitos” o puerta de entrada al catálogo del artista en cuestión. Y no, perdón, no está Peter Frampton en esta lista.

Tan siglo XX, que en esta lista de 38 tracks, ¡hay uno solo del siglo XXI! El honor le pertenece a Sunn O))), que le ha otorgado especial atención a la puesta en escena de su vivo, y el disco del cual proviene el track en cuestión (Domkirke), es per se una curiosidad dentro del catálogo de la banda: fue registrado en la catedral de Bergen, Noruega, y utiliza el órgano de dicha iglesia. Luego de eso, el criterio de selección es variopinto: por supuesto el gusto personal prima, pero puede alternar entre importancia histórica y representatividad (Nirvana, Kiss Alive I, retocado en estudio), performances de rock directamente incuestionables (Queen, UFO, Grateful Dead, Fields of the Nephilim, ¡Riff!), registros logrados, pero también cargados de peso político (Johnny Cash en la prisión de Folsom, el regreso, aun con amenazas, de Mercedes Sosa a la Argentina tras años de exilio), emblemas del jazz (Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, uno de los mejores discos en toda su discografía del recientemente fallecido Sonny Rollins), circunstancias especiales y específicas (Ekome, con su participación en el primer festival WOMAD organizado por Peter Gabriel, que hundió financieramente al inglés, Fabrizio de André y su gran encuentro con Premiata Forneria Marconi, Steve Hunter y Dick Wagner dándole un giro al sonido habitual de Lou Reed).
Y para el final, lo mejor, claro: si el disco en vivo de rock por antonomasia debía prometer intensidad inmanejable, es menester cerrar la playlist con los diecinueve minutos de “Space Truckin’”, a cargo de, por supuesto, Deep Purple.

Quizá por algo de eso haya cedido espacio el disco en vivo en estos últimos 26 años: ¿alguien se imagina a una banda indie, cualquiera, y con el debido respeto, saliendo a «matar» en escena? -no en términos de decibeles y/o virtuosismo, sino de intensidad de performance- ¿Quién quiere un disco en vivo de Kendrick Lamar? Probablemente para esperar registros de shows memorables, haya que aprovechar el corrimiento del reflector sobre el rock, para buscar en otros lugares: Mdou Moctar, por mencionar el primer ejemplo que me viene a la mente tecleando, está en condiciones de ofrecer un gran show en vivo junto a su grupo que tenga un posterior registro discográfico.

Hawkwind en vivo. Sí, Lemmy Kilmister al bajo.

Sin más, la playlist de 38: en Spotify y también en YouTube, para quien quiera escucharlo en una calidad un poquito mejor (y, en algunos casos, con filmaciones de esos tracks distintas a las del disco en vivo; era difícil no poner “Susy Cadillac” en la versión con JAF).

I’m a big fan of the quiet-ish mellow Bill Evans records, and other than You Must Believe In Spring, this might be my favorite one.

It’s so laid back, so beautiful, and one of those all-purpose any time, anywhere kind of records.

Maximum Sunday chillage.

One of the yearly RSD Evans release—this one from 2021. Basically, two concerts from 1969 in the Netherlands with Evans (piano), Eddie Gomez (bass), and Marty Morell (drums). Nice included booklet with interviews and photos.

Some unfortunate tape warble during the second concert, but good anyway!

Bill Evans, Behind the Dikes: The 1969 Netherlands Recordings, 2021 on Elemental Music

Zev Feldman of Resonance Records teamed up (as Producer, Liner Notes, and Researcher) with Elemental Music for yet another Bill Evans live set from the 1960s. These were often bootlegged but get official high quality treatment here.

The recordings were made at KRO Studio I in Hilversum March 26th, 1969 and RAI Congrescentrum Amsterdam November 26th, 1969. Evans is joined by Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell. The release was mastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed by Standard Vinyl, with an insert booklet with photos, essays, and interviews. It’s a great package.

My copy—via private sale—is the 3xLP 2021 deluxe edition, numbered, on 180 gram vinyl, which was issued for Record Store Day 2021.

Bill Evans Trio, Bill Evans at Town Hall Volume One, 1967 on Verve

Recorded at Town Hall on February 21st, 1966. The trio here includes Chuck Isreals and Arnold Wise – this being the only commercial recording with Wise on drums.

The second side includes the 13 minute “Solo -In Memory of His Father, Harry L. Evans” who had died in 1966.

My copy—via private sale—is the 2022 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue supervised by Chad Kassem from Analogue Productions.

Bill Evans, Live at Art D’Lugoff’s Top Of the Gate, 2012 on Resonance

Another Sunday, another Bill Evan’s live LP from Resonance. This one was recorded October 23, 1968 in Greenwich Village. This time Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell join Evans.

This was recorded by Geoge Klabin himself, founder of the Rising Jazz Stars foundation and Resonance Records, as a 22 year old college student.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2019 Record Store Day limited edition numbered release.

Bill Evans, At The Montreux Jazz Festival, 1968 on Verve

Second 1968 Bill Evans performance I’ve posted this week, this one has the trio (again with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette) at Casino de Montreux in Switzerland, and was recorded by the technical department of Radio Suisse Romande.

My copy (via a private sale) is the 2020 Analogue Productions reissue on two 45rpm 200g records, cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab. Sounds fantastic, though I can’t say I like having to change the platter twice as often.

Much of this has, of course, been released before...many times. However, this time they've carefully reconstructed the original tapes using the Plangent Process...and they've never sounded better.

The beautifully produced set includes everything recoded durring those sessions, including 17 never-before-released tracks.

The Bill Evans Trio - Moon Beams

This 1962 release was from the first sessions recorded after LaFaro passed rather tragically. Retaining Paul Motian (drums), Chuck Israels (bass) replaced him.

It's an interesting comparison with the LaFaro days (Debby/Vanguard/Explorations/Portrait), with Israels less out front, paired more with Motian great brushwork than with Evans.

None of which to say it's not a classic.

Bill Evans, Live at the Village Vanguard, 1967 on Riverside

This is actually a reissue of what originally came out in 1961 (also on Riverside) as Sunday at the Village Vanguard, credited to the Bill Evans Trio “featuring Scott La Faro.” La Faro died in a car accident less than two weeks after the gig was recorded. Evans on piano, La Faro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. Produced by Orrin Keepnews.

Not sure why Riverside reissued this credited to just Bill Evans, but happy to find a pressing from the 60s in great shape. An absolute must have.

Bill Evans Trio - Explorations

Hard to believe this, the 2nd studio LP of the Bill Evans Trio (Evans/LaFaro/Motian), is the last. Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby would follow, and then LaFaro would be gone, and Motian would move on one record later.

They're all in such sympathy with each other…it's a great LP.

Bill Evans (trio) in Norway

RSD Black Friday release (also available at streaming services) of a 1970 concert by Evans, Eddie Gomez (bass) and Marty Newell (drums) in Kongsberg.

A great, well-recorded (not perfect, but VVG) set, played quite energetically. Evans had recently switched to Methodone, and was more animated than usual, and he's ably accompanied by Gomez and Newell.

Bill Evans, Spring Leaves, 1976 on Milestone

2xLP release from 1976 which collects two previous Riverside releases: Portrait In Jazz (1960) and Explorations (1961). This one includes two takes on “Autumn Leaves” – one which appeared in Mono (Riverside 315) and one in Stereo (Riverside 1152). This also includes “The Boy Next Door” which was left off of Explorations originally.

Bill Evans Trio - How my heart sings!

This came out of the first session post-Vanguard/Debbie, after the death of Scott LaFaro, and you can see in the (great) liner notes how much this affected Evans.

That said, this album of upbeat, swinging tunes belies that extratextual sadness to my ears, with Chuck Israels on Bass and Paul Motian on drums…except perhaps on Summertime, which seems perhaps a bit wistful in this rendition.

Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby

Can’t say much that hasn’t already been said.

This, though, is the new UHQR double-45 pressing, and it really is great sounding.

My first copy was regrettably warped and had a periodic, every-rotation static issue (damn this hot weather - I assume it was in a boiling hot truck). Acoustic Sounds sent replacements which are perfect - kudos to them for standing behind their stuff.
