- Sliding dropouts (allows fixed gear, variation of geometry)

Very bike nerdy, but if you sometimes have to route stuff internally through a frame... I got myself one of those fancy ParkTool magnetic guides a while ago and I think it has saved my sanity already a couple of times. Installed a new dropper post last week and without the magnet, this would have driven me crazy.

There are some taps that are more commonly used on bike frames. This one is a 5 mm x 0.8 mm tap from a standard tap and die set which matches most mudguard/rack eyelets and bottle cage bosses. I say "most" as it is the size for all bikes I have worked on, but I don't know how standard these things really are. If there's one thing we can be sure about when it comes to bikes, it is that there are lots of so called 'standards'!
It's arguably not something that should be necessary. When you buy a bike, it ought to be finished properly and not have paint-filled threads or non-faced surfaces.

It's not often I need to use a frame tap, but it's very handy to have when I do.
Today, it was to remove paint from the threads to be able to fit some mudguards to a circa 30 year old bike.

Put the chain back on the rebuilt bike, and found it kept slipping off the inner ring. Couldn't quite work out what was going on at first till I pulled the cranks off and.. well, there's your problem

Reading the instruction manual is good advice. But also, don't forget to look in the box for the correct adapter before panicking that you bought the wrong part.

An event that I'd be very much interested in regarding bicycle maintenance would be the following:
It's a mix between a escape room and a practical workshop. In the room there's a couple of common tools and a tubeless tire slashed with a razorblade. To get out you have to sew it back together using a needle and some dental floss.
Maybe there are other challenges of similar nature... -

Yesterday I narrowly avoided a very expensive outcome to some bike maintenance.
My #Shimano Dura Ace FD-R9100 front derailleur needed adjustment. I noticed the adjustment barrel (ringed in green) was sticking so removed it to clean. Once removed, a 2 mm piece of plastic (ringed in yellow) fell out. This acts like a nylon nut, adding friction to the cable adjustment screw on the input link.
Getting the plastic piece back in so that it held the cable adjustment screw took 45 minutes using tweezers. The piece is tucked inside the derailleur in a hard to access spot and is only held in place by the cable adjustment screw. It fell out more times than I can recall! 🤬
Installing that tiny piece of plastic took massively disproportionate effort. And a lot of words to explain in this post! 🙂

If someone with my very concrete skill-sets isn't totally barking up the wrong tree, I'm a #BikeMechanic with 3 years under my belt, have 3 years of #operations, #logistics, and #personnel management, #B2B client #management, customer service, and (depending on how Thursday's licensing exam goes) will be a certified EMT-B. I have a cumulative 3+ years behind the wheel of large cargo and passenger vans, with a fairly clean driving record.
My work history is full of naive, optimistic do-gooder work, and I'd like to keep it that way, but am at the point where my priorities are shifting to earning enough bread while conserving enough bandwidth to keep myself and my loved-ones comfortable. More naivety, no doubt, but an enby can dream.

After pumping them up 10 more times, and having them laid on the side for a complete day each side, they're kind of ok now. Now they already take 5 days to get from 3 to 2 bar instead of the initial 20 hours. 😕

I DID IT! All by myself! Thanks to the invaluable Calvin Jones, the Big Blue Book and lots of patience, all front wheel spokes are now tensioned within 20% tolerance again. Also: now I get why you 'd want an app for that. I'm generally not a big app fan, but this one:💙
