I learned two things recently whilst fixing my bikes. This is the first in case it helps anyone out there.
I had a right-hand Shimano shifter that would only intermittently upshift (to a harder gear) when the smaller lever was pressed.
It was an old shifter so I bought a second hand replacement.
Only when I removed the old shifter did I notice that its plastic case was loose. This wasn't evident whilst the lever was installed and the bar tape was in place. I discovered the loose case had affected the operation of the shifter. After I tightened a screw on the underside of the case - that I never knew was there (see photos) - the case was no longer loose and the shifter worked every time I pressed the lever.
I'm sure my new spare lever will be useful at some point!

For the last two years my bike's rear cog was held in place with epoxy glue and prayers. This happened because the lock nut welded itself to the hub and had to be cut open. The hub's thread was so destroyed that it needed to be replaced. I needed the bike so I McGyvered this solution. This time I put some anti-seize on the thread so this should not happen again.
This afternoon's job: trying to fix a problem threaded headset.
I stripped and re-greased everything, as well as adding a couple of new ball bearings in the lower part. These weren't replacement bearings. Just filling a gap. I guess a few were left out when it was manufactured. Unusually, the bearings were loose in the cup.
When reassembling, I noticed the crown race was a bit wonky. Out came some rarely used tools to remove and refit it.

I suspect that once the outer ring (with the three engagement points) is unscrewed, the inner cap will also unscrew (same thread direction).
I would bet that those holes are for a special spanner to be able to turn the cap. More recent versions of the same type of bottom bracket can have holes for a pin spanner, rather than those much larger squares.
Based on my recent experience, the cap might be quite loose and be able to be able to be unscrewed with little effort and without a special spanner.
Inside, you'll find a cup and cone bearing set at each end of the spindle. Ball bearings may be completely loose or be held in a cage.

Recipe:
▶️ Penetrating oil applied from the open end of the bottom bracket shell. Left for 24 hours with the bike held horizontally in a workstand, right-side facing down, to encourage the oil into the threads.
▶️ More penetrating oil applied to the outside of the fixed cup.
▶️ Several good taps on a fixed cup wrench with a rubber mallet.

On last night's ride, I realised I had claimed victory prematurely. The creak returned.
I now know that the creak was coming from the rear quick-release and not the rear mech hanger bolts. When I removed the quick-release to adjust the hanger bolts, I must've moved the quick-release enough to temporarily stop the creak.
A drop of chain lube on the internals of the cam, plus a smear of grease on the threads on the other end for good measure and... silence.
No creak 🙂

A tale of chasing down a creak on my bike.
What I knew 📋
- Each strong down pedal with my right leg caused it
- Happened in and out of the saddle
- Happened in large and small chainring
Order of attack 🔢
1. Rear quick release tightness ❌
2. Play in rear hub and crank ❌
3. Grease pedal threads ❌
4. Chainring bolt torque ❌
5. Refit and grease left crank arm ❌
6. Rear derailleur bolt torque ❌
7. Rear derailleur hanger bolt torque ✅
On reflection, 5 was a bit high in the order but easy enough to do having the necessary tools. I was surprised it wasn't due to a dry pedal thread, hence checking this early on.
The creak is now gone and I can enjoy tomorrow's ride more 😀🚴 I really appreciate not having distractions when riding my bike.

Very bike nerdy, but if you sometimes have to route stuff internally through a frame... I got myself one of those fancy ParkTool magnetic guides a while ago and I think it has saved my sanity already a couple of times. Installed a new dropper post last week and without the magnet, this would have driven me crazy.
There are some taps that are more commonly used on bike frames. This one is a 5 mm x 0.8 mm tap from a standard tap and die set which matches most mudguard/rack eyelets and bottle cage bosses. I say "most" as it is the size for all bikes I have worked on, but I don't know how standard these things really are. If there's one thing we can be sure about when it comes to bikes, it is that there are lots of so called 'standards'!
It's arguably not something that should be necessary. When you buy a bike, it ought to be finished properly and not have paint-filled threads or non-faced surfaces.
It's not often I need to use a frame tap, but it's very handy to have when I do.
Today, it was to remove paint from the threads to be able to fit some mudguards to a circa 30 year old bike.
Put the chain back on the rebuilt bike, and found it kept slipping off the inner ring. Couldn't quite work out what was going on at first till I pulled the cranks off and.. well, there's your problem
Reading the instruction manual is good advice. But also, don't forget to look in the box for the correct adapter before panicking that you bought the wrong part.
An event that I'd be very much interested in regarding bicycle maintenance would be the following:
It's a mix between a escape room and a practical workshop. In the room there's a couple of common tools and a tubeless tire slashed with a razorblade. To get out you have to sew it back together using a needle and some dental floss.
Maybe there are other challenges of similar nature...
Yesterday I narrowly avoided a very expensive outcome to some bike maintenance.
My #Shimano Dura Ace FD-R9100 front derailleur needed adjustment. I noticed the adjustment barrel (ringed in green) was sticking so removed it to clean. Once removed, a 2 mm piece of plastic (ringed in yellow) fell out. This acts like a nylon nut, adding friction to the cable adjustment screw on the input link.
Getting the plastic piece back in so that it held the cable adjustment screw took 45 minutes using tweezers. The piece is tucked inside the derailleur in a hard to access spot and is only held in place by the cable adjustment screw. It fell out more times than I can recall! 🤬
Installing that tiny piece of plastic took massively disproportionate effort. And a lot of words to explain in this post! 🙂

If someone with my very concrete skill-sets isn't totally barking up the wrong tree, I'm a #BikeMechanic with 3 years under my belt, have 3 years of #operations, #logistics, and #personnel management, #B2B client #management, customer service, and (depending on how Thursday's licensing exam goes) will be a certified EMT-B. I have a cumulative 3+ years behind the wheel of large cargo and passenger vans, with a fairly clean driving record.
My work history is full of naive, optimistic do-gooder work, and I'd like to keep it that way, but am at the point where my priorities are shifting to earning enough bread while conserving enough bandwidth to keep myself and my loved-ones comfortable. More naivety, no doubt, but an enby can dream.
Oh, more work history highlights:
I've worked as a #HistoricPreservationist with an emphasis on mortuary masonry. I am able to take on repair and maintenance work that requires a significant amount of research and referencing historic norms, past work, and document my work for future craftspeople. Even got a little sciencey when an intern set up a new cleaning experiment and left, where I took over the documentation of the new technique compared to the old technique compared to a control.
The point is, I've got a brain on me, I'm able to quickly adapt to new environments, processes, and modes of work, and I'm good at problem solving.
