  1. Often we’ve communicated with other #BikeAdvocates by phone, or online, long before meeting in person. That was the case with Paola Berthoin of Carmel Valley, and it was such a joy to meet her face to face on April 17 at the Fridays #FarmersMarket in Monterey (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour).

Paola, an #artist, has biked 20,267 miles, mostly local miles. For Paola, her bike is “a perfect alternative mode of #transportation!”

BTW, we share her concern—and that of #CalBike—"Don’t Punish E-Bikes for the E-Moto Problem”; take action: calbike.org/ab1557ab1942/

Those of you who followed @bikemonterey back when we were on the bird site, 2009-2022, may recall hearing Paola's name from us there, or on our website (e.g., bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up on bikemonterey.org/resources/bic).

Born in #London, England, she came to Carmel Valley in 1965 with her mother and three sisters. Learn more about Paola Fiorelle Berthoin: paolafiorelleberthoin.com/about

  6. As long as we’ve known this woman—our precious sister-in-law—she's cherished the natural world. She loves outdoor sports and activities, from exploring tide pools to biking, since she relishes being close to nature! Today she sent us a photo of her newest ride, a trike given to her by some friends who were moving away from her community in Fort Myers, Florida.

As she'd told us earlier (bikemonterey.org/voices-of-peo) "Inside the all-ages gated community where we live, a lot of people bicycle, including those who are seniors. Many bike to get around, and many home rentals include a bicycle….The trikes are really popular here, and most have baskets on them for carrying things. Many have cupholders and cell phone holders; they have them all decked out! Many people do put flags on their trikes to be more visible. Often you’ll see people with their dog riding with them too.”

  7. We don’t think this Monterey County resident is out of touch with distressing circumstances in our nation, including surreal actions by the Commander in Chief. In fact, this local is a U.S. military veteran (unlike the C of C, ironically) and a member of Veterans for Peace.

Yet even when news is troubling, whenever we see him, he wears a bright smile. We feel sure he keeps his spirits up—regardless of the day’s news or the day’s weather— by doing lots of pedaling! Whenever we see him, as again today, he’s on his bicycle.

  11. @bweller The irony is that if they took the reports and enforced the laws, they'd probably be faced with fewer reports.

the actual, practiced threshold for cops enforcing motor vehicle laws against drivers for infractions that endanger cyclists

    is actual death.

in my own experience, and in statements from them,

you need to die before theyll press charges.

  13. @nedhamson1 okay now remove every CCTV camera. no? your argument isnt about cameras then.

its a public space for a reason. there is no expectation of privacy.

the issue is internet connected to a giant unaccountable corporation or government.

I capture footage on my bodycam as a #BikeCommuter of cars doing things that could kill me like running me off the road a couple days ago. Without it nothing can happen unless I actually die. I've been hit. You'd take that away from me.

    @cdarwin

  14. @starraven this. its the internet-connected and faceless corporation thats the issue. as a cyclist, my bodycam gets a lot of footage of cars running me off the road or driving down the bike path.

  15. This is the first Bike Parka we’ve seen in city of Monterey.

But it’s definitely not the first time we’ve seen its rider! He bikes “everywhere, all the time.”

  16. Slacked on my #TootEveryDay plan, whoops. Here's today's thought:
A lot of people advocate old used bicycles for everyday riding to save money and keep decent bikes out of the dump, but a lot of old bikes (in the USA) are not fit for purpose. The streets are dirty and bumpy and full of clueless drivers. You want something that can take a fat tire for the potholes, wide handlebars for quick control, and upright position so you can see clearly in front without straining your neck. Old road bikes are not this.
The best value for money in commuter and utility bikes has to be hardtail mountain bikes from the early 2000s. Right when disc brakes and 29-inch wheels were becoming the standard for mtb, but geometry was still pretty similar to street bikes.
Swap out the (old, tired, useless) suspension fork for a rigid fork (with plenty of tire clearance) swap the knobbies for 50 mm street tires, swap the bars for something with a little backsweep for wrist comfort.
You get a bike that has a comfortable upright riding position, disc brakes for stopping quickly in traffic, and fat tires for traction and comfort on wet, bumpy, dirty city streets, BUT is less tiring to ride than a pure mtb with energy-sucking suspension and knobby tires. It will also usually have a more practical gear range than most road, hybrid, or city bikes.
And to boot, it will still be decent on green trails and fire roads (non-technical mtb riding). Win-win-win.
Maybe I'm just biased though because I love mine... early model Kona Unit set up with 3×9 gearing, disc brakes, rigid fork, and diy "crazy bars".

  27. HELLO!

The Trail To Nowhere is now The Trail To Somewhere! The Long Bridge Connector (LBC) between MVT & Boundary Drive is now open to the public. Please boost!

The intersection of LBC & MVT is located between the Navy Merchant Marine Memorial & the ramp to the 14th Street Bridge. At the other end, use the west roundabout to connect to Long Bridge Park / Pentagon / Pentagon Metro

  28. My second bicycle commute took almost eight minutes less than the first one (32 minutes rather than 40). No wind and a little more effort made a big difference. I hope I have enough umph left in my legs to get home as well ...

  29. Since my truck broke down a few weeks ago, I've been riding my bike for 100% of local trips, about 100 miles per week.
Overall I'm very pleased with how my fitness for riding is improving, but there is one problem: my shoulders are killing me! It's not like the muscle soreness I got in my legs when I first increased my riding, it's been getting worse not better over time. I don't have any general loss of range of motion, but it feels hot and tingly all the time and I get stabbing pain at random times when I move my arms.
Someone I know suggested finding a physical therapist who understands cycling to advise me on riding posture and exercises I could do, and another person suggested getting a professional bike fitting, and another suggested I just need to raise my handlebars to get weight off my arms. Has anyone here dealt with this issue? What helped you?

  30. @bikeottawa We have stopped biking in high heels (including because we've stopped wearing them :) ) and we've also occasionally yearned for a skirt guard, for safety (when we've forgotten to clip up a skirt that ended up getting caught in spokes or chain). Still, we join you in being fans of biking in nearly any sort of clothing! Wish we were near you, we'd love be part of your in-person fun.

I’m a #bikecommuter and #bikepunk so i’m less interested in #cycling content and more interested in your fucked up vintage roadie conversion or big tire bike or rivendell rip-off or #bikepolo setup. Currently learning to weld so i can build #tallbikes.

I guess that’s good for now.
