  1. Best #GreenCities: 12 Greenest Cities In The World And Why - #UnityEnvironmentalUniversity (formerly #UnityCollege)

    March 6, 2024

    "What Makes A City Green?

"What are green cities? A green city is a city that actively works to foster the health and #WellBeing of its people and the #NaturalEnvironment. Often, we look at government policies, community practices, and infrastructure to determine whether a city is 'green' or not.

"However, the greenness of a city actually exists on a spectrum and is multi-faceted. There is no such thing as the greenest city. The greenest cities in the world are those that are doing more to be sustainable when compared to other cities. The greenness of a city includes the following factors and more:

    - The availability of #GreenSpaces
    - #PublicTransportation options
    - #Bikeability
    - #RenewableEnergy options
    - #CarbonFootprint
    - #Recycling programs

    "What Makes A University Green?

"An #EcoFriendly city and an eco-friendly university have a lot in common, including #sustainable buildings, #CommunityFarms and #gardens, and #EthicallySourced goods. For Unity Environmental University, an essential part of going green was completely divesting from #FossilFuels and investing in renewable clean energy instead. Ultimately, being a green university is about prioritizing sustainability as a core value and guiding principle for the institution.

"12 Greenest Cities In The World

"#Urban areas around the world are striving to become more environmentally friendly as we continue to grapple with the negative effects of climate change. Many of the world’s greenest cities focus on mitigating those effects by minimizing their carbon footprint, shifting to renewable sources for energy, and improving public transportation. Other cities are taking innovative approaches to integrating green spaces and urban farming.

"This list of the top 12 greenest cities is the result of a holistic review of the most environmentally friendly urban areas in the world. They are not listed in any particular order."

  6. We have released a new hiBike update in the Climate Action Navigator🚲
You can now assess urban #bikeability including:
🌳 Greenness – How much greenery is there along cycling paths?
🚳 Detour Factors – Can cyclists take the shortest route to their destination?
📊 Extended Summaries – more detailed overview stats, also to assess data quality

#Helsinki marks one year with zero traffic fatalities (starting in June 2024) thanks to a diffused speed limit of 30 km/h. Our #hiBike map highlights that most paths are designated for cyclists or shared with cars with a 15 km/h speed limit.

  8. 💡🚲Interested in finding out how bike-friendly your city is & the role of bikeability in the transition to sustainable cities?
Our assessment tool 𝗵𝗶𝗕𝗶𝗸𝗲 assesses bikeability by analyzing specific aspects of the urban street infrastructure. It is part of our 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿, our dashboard launching on May 15th, to inform local climate action.

  9. The #30daymapchallenge is back! 🎉

Let´s dive directly into #Day1 with a classic map with points created by our colleague Sebastian Block:

🚲 Bicycle parking in Heidelberg 🚲

Improving cities' #bikeability is about more than creating bike lanes. Part of it is having a safe place to lock your bike. This map uses #OSM data to show the locations and capacity of bike parking locations in #Heidelberg. The Neuenheimer Feld campus is a hotspot for bike parking, as well as the main train station.

  15. Little bit disappointed that The Boy will have to wait another year before being able to do his #Bikeability Level 3 - something to do with insurance not allowing children below Year Six to do it. Doesn’t help when some journeys require road #cycling thanks to poor infrastructure

  16. For the morning crowd. I biked to IKEA and all I got was an understanding of how #bikeability corresponds with the sprawling, #CarDependency development of my city over time.

"A staggering 60% of all car trips cover less than 10km."

  20. Orientation towards the common good in cities: The role of individual urban mobility behavior

"Because of the design of cars, the interactions car passengers have with their direct environment are significantly reduced."

"There are few opportunities for interaction between the driver and the environment...Isolation can reinforce individualistic behaviors and cause drivers to reduced opportunities for social and spatial interaction."

"In contrast to motorized individual transport, non-motorized individual transport means active transportation (walking, cycling). Research has shown that this mode of transportation is beneficial for communities (reducing traffic, decreasing noise, and reducing pollution) as well as individuals (increased physical and mental well-being)"

"Through direct interaction with the geographic and topographic environment (different road surfaces, hills and valleys, parks or play streets, etc.), bicyclists develop a rich and extensive cognitive “picture of the city”."

  21. The Boy did his #Bikeability Level 2 training recently, and so far it's made an obvious difference. He's doing his ABC check, getting on the bike from the near side, is more deliberate in putting his bike on the road, and makes more obvious surrounding checks.

I've been telling and showing him these things for years and he's been a good, careful rider. Still, just one day with an instructor has made a clear difference. Now it's just a question of what sticks and becomes good habits.

I like #mountainbiking and biking generally, good food and #RealAle I live in the East Midalnds with my lovely partner, who's an academic.

  24. A new bike/ped bridge just opened in #Atlanta, spanning the railroad tracks of "the gulch" and connecting the Castleberry Hill neighborhood to South Downtown and the Garnett MARTA station. It's fantastic, and a huge win for #walkability and #bikeability. It also has a cool section passing through the former Norfolk Southern building, which is now residential. Let's do more of this! #BikeTooter #urbanism #ATL #trains

  26. My eldest is having #Bikeability level 1 in school today (cycle proficiency training for those not in UK).

Can't wait to hear all about it and am wondering if she'll pick up any new skills.

We've been discussing how #wheelies are not part of bikeability unfortunately.
